my 84 CJ7 starts with pliers. the actuator rod seems to be disconnected or broken from the lock, can i replace the actuator rod? or do i need a whole ne ignition system. and how do i accomplish these tasks.

First thing to do is fill out the profile so we will know what you are working on.:D
I think you will find that the column parts can be found at a grave yard in a 90s Chevrolet or a Jeep Cherokee.
Have you invested in a service manual yet. It does an excellent job of illustrating the column and switch assembly. It is going to be very difficult to tell you how to work on it with out you being able to read this first.
When you say start with pliers do you mean rather than a key ? is the lock toast?

kind of sounds like an adjustment problem the switch moves. there is a screw that holds it to the column that rides in a slot. loosen it and slide the switch down and re tighten the screw.

the lock is fine(and new) apparently i need a new Ignition rack, thats whats broken. ant the actuator rod is a bit chewed up from the pliers, and i would like to replace that as well.

do you object to a used one?? a 90s Cherokee has what you need, I believe. and you get to see how it comes apart.
