Getting ready to change gears in my front Dana 30 this weekend...

Any advice / gotcha's / warnings / etc. ?

Any great links to write-ups or videos?

I have a nice rebuild kit, donor carrier with ring and pinion. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just read this more thoroughly and this write up is for a Dana 60 - much difference between a 30 and a 60?

The principles are the same.

Look up Dana 30 rebuild manual on google and download the pdf that pops up. I used this for my front end build. That manual is written by spicer and has it all for your needs.

Got it - thank you...

Dana axles are all very similar. One difference is the smaller axles (such as a Dana 30 ) use a crush collar. Bigger axles (such as Dana 60) use shims for the pinion depth.

The thing about regearing an axle is it may not take long for an experienced mechanic to do it but if you're new to regearing axles it will take you much longer. Accept that before you start.
You may set the pinion preload and the pinion depth. Shim the differential side to side for gear meshing. Set the backlash. Then you go to check the contact patern and then find out "Oh I've got too much pinion depth. I need to start all over."
It can be time consuming for a beginner.
Good luck. :chug:

Yeah, it took me about 8hrs to do the rear AMC20 ...and that was with a torch for heating, hot tank for cleaning, welder for making pullers, etc.

Spent a lot of time reading, looking at pictures and videos, etc. Think we got it right on the third try so pretty lucky.

Dreading the front a bit, a lot more to take apart up there so, you know...

Just really looking forward to having them done so I can cruise a bit without having it wound tight all the time.:)
