AMC 20 rear
What kind of traction aid do you have up front, detroit truetrac or a softlocker? And what kind do you plan on putting in the rear. Depending on what kind of driveing you what to use it for can help deside what you want or need in the rear since you are replacing the ring and pinion anyway? Thanks. I have 3:31's and am changing over to 4:11's. I knew I had to have a new carrier for the front so I got a new detroit for the front and am just doing the gear swap in the rear, already have the one piece mosers in the rear.
The problem with an electric locker for the rear is that the only one available for the AMC20 is the Auburn Gear Ected. These are actually closer to a high bias Limited slip than a real locker. They claim to lock up, but the torque rating they will handle locked can quickly become surpassed in low 4wd. I'd love to have one of the Eaton E-lockers in my CJ7 , but they're not available. I have an Ox in the back and a Truetrac up front and I've been very happy with them overall. The front Truetrac is the best bang for the buck in the traction department, IMO.Sounds like a soild plan. I went with the truetrac both front and back but looking back on it now I could have got a selectable in the rear for about $AMC 150 more but just didn't have the cash at the time. Just my opinion I'm no expert but I would go with a electromagnet selectabel locker no cable to buy cause the wiring usually comes with the locker. I've heard the cable type can start to bind and be hard to engage overtime. I could be wroung though. Maybe someone else can chime in with their opinions.
I wasn't aware of that issue with the Auburn gear brand. Have you called the manufactor directly, I know when I was ordering parts for my AMC20 the company I was dealing with had to call the manufactor and order it directly from them, they didn't have it on there inventory list? Then it sounds like a Ox locker is the way to go. If I had it to do over I would have held out for a true selectible locker in the rear. But hind sight is always 20/20.The problem with an electric locker for the rear is that the only one available for the AMC20 is the Auburn Gear Ected. I like it. Althogh I haven't had it on any hard core wheeling yet so that is to be seen. Also I haven't had it on snow or ice yet I Just put it in this april so this winter we will see, I'm sure I will have to be carefull till I can get the feel for it in the snow and ice.No, I've just never seen it listed. I just figured it's a new product and they seem more interested in the new car market then catering to a 35 year old design. How do you like the Truetrac in the rear? I may have went that way when I setup my CJ, but they weren't advertising them for the AMC20 yet.
