Well tonight I got my power steering gear back ( another story) and got that put in when I started the cj to bleed the power steering system I started to smell fuel. I looked underneath and had major gas leek. Started digging and found that the gas was pouring out of this hole in the side of the fuel pump casting. It really sprays out with engine running and just slow drip when not running. Attached is a photo of where it is spraying out. It is the hole on the right side just left of the fuel pump mounting bolt.
So my question is what the :censored:?I have not had the jeep running for two weeks because the steering has been apart and it wasn't leaking fuel before. Why would this be lee king and what do I do to fix, replace fuel pump? Thanks in advance for any input.

No fixing you need to replace the pump. It sounds like it was just your pumps time to quit ...... a hole in the diaphragm. When you get the new pump, get the small one, the larger one will fit, but you will have to hold your mouth just right to get the bigger one in.

Hard to say from the pic but maybe the seams on the fuel pump just let go. Its a rather inexpensive part. I have an extra one if you want it

Yep it happens, Its a rubber diaphragm and ruptured when you got it fired back up. Its old and was ready to die

I figured it was just a bad pump, went out at an odd time. I was looking online for the pump and it looks like there are four different ones on napa online. Two have the fuel connections on the top, looks like mine but upside down. And two with the connections on the bottom like mine. One of these has the fuel line from the tank a little different from mine.
I have changed fuel pumps on small block Chevys any tricks to the amc?

I was going to mention the top vs bottom configuration. Just get the same as yours and I hope you have better luck removing yours than I did mine. The PO rounded mine of to the point where it needed to be replaced. About the only trick is getting access to the pump. I was replacing my engine at the time and didn't have the fender in place which made access relatively easy. If I were you I'd remove the fender for the job. The fender is actually fairly easy to remove, but you don't need to do it. Other than that the pump will go on the same as a Chevy. The spring on the pump arm can be fun to deal with, you almost need a helper. One to turn the wrench the other to fight the return spring while holding the pump in place.

I got a new one coming , it will be here at 2:00 this afternoon. Wish me luck.

Yeah, good luck with the change out. Shouldn't be too much of a project.

While you're at it: Check the rubber fuel line condition and the clamps. Nothing like performing a well done job just to have a fifty cent accessory part fail on you and cause you to have to go right back in there. Next, pull your oil dip stick and smell the oily end to see if gasoline actually made it to the oil pan. If it does smell like gas, you should change the oil and filter.

Manual fuel pumps can dump gasoline inside the crankcase when their diaphragms fail like yours did.

Got it changed. It went real smooth only took about a half hour. I think I lucked out and the cam lobe must of been in the right spot. :D I did replace the fuel hose while I was at it. Like you said for $7 worth of hose and clamps it was worth just doing it all at ounce. I did inspect the oil and I don't think it smells like gas.

Excellent. Mine had power a power steering pump and air pump in the way which made getting to the fuel pump interesting. Stock fuel pumps are inexpensive and work so well it always the number of guys that switch to an electric pump always surprises me..
