I am having a heck of a time getting the inner seal out.
I have used a slide hammer puller and it doesn't budge.
Does the seal back up against a shoulder?
In the enclosed picture, is the line at the arrow part of the seal?
Any suggestions getting this sucker out is appreciated!

You have to remove the bearing race first. ;)

You could try a spray on lubricant like a Liquid Wrench. The slide hammer is the way to do it, maybe a bigger one or a bearing puller that grabs the inside of the bearing.

Is the race what the arrow is pointing to in the picture??

And when I use the slide puller, I am hitting it hard enough that the puller jaws bust right through the seal.

YES, on the arrow.

Thank you for your help with this.

Now that you point it out to me, it is clear that the race has to come out to get at that seal. The repair info I’ve seen on the web so far, never mentions the race or its replacement. And the bearing replacement kits I have seen also don’t include the race. I would think all these parts would come matched in a kit. Am I missing something? Or do most repairs not require the inner seal replacement?

Replace the inner and outer seal, anytime you pull the axle.
Pack the bearing with grease.
You really should be looking at Moser 1-piece axles, and get rid of the POS 2 piece OEM axles.

Looks like I have a one piece Superior axle from the previous owner. BTW that friggin race removal is testing me too.

Give it a good soaking with penetrating oil and let it work for a day or so. Don't apply a lot of heat to the axle tube beyond warming it a little bit with a propane torch. You could cause distortion. A slide hammer is what I have found to work the best. Worst case scenario, I have had to use a small carbide burr with an die grinder or Dremmel tool and almost cut all the way through the old race. Do this in 2 places 180° apart, then using a chisel, split the old race.

Thank you...I will give that a shot
Speaking of the axle warming up to much...that is how this whole process started. I hear a lot of squeaking coming from the rear. When i got home the right rear had a burning smell and the wheel and axle where very warm. Pulled the axle and roller bearings fell out all over the place. And I am guessing because of all that heat the race is fried in place.

Follow Bass's advice. :chug:

Bass,

Your suggestion worked like a charm…again thank you.

As previously stated I have the Superior one piece axle; do I just put in the new bearings and supplied spacer or do I have to deal with setting up the spacer to some spec? And, anything I should be concerned with installing the new race??

Reinstall as they came out.
Grease the lips of the inner seal
Use silicon sealer on the flange and backing plate to keep water out.
You should check the other axle also.

What bearing kit are you using?

I have always used the Moser bearing kit for 1 piece axles (I've done a couple bearing replacements on Moser shafts and Superior shafts) and followed Moser's instructions. They say to install the seal and spacer, then put the bearing in the tube and measure how much the bearing sticks out. I think the spec is 0.020"-0.080", but that's off the top of my head, so might not be exact. Every one I've done (5 or 6 total) have been in spec and I haven't had any bearing issues.

I have not purchased the bearing kit yet. None of the kits I see on-line have the race. I am a bit surprised by this because doesn't the race come out if you are pulling the inner seal?

Do local part stores carry that Moser kit or do i have to source it on-line?

I always ordered from Summit/Quadratec/4wd Hardware, wherever I could it the cheapest.

Most of these bearings come with the race on it, so you may not see it separately in a picture, or it may not be listed separately. What bearing kits are you looking at? FYI, the stock bearing won't work with the 1-piece shafts. Most 1-piece shafts use the same bearing setup (I think it's a Timken set 9), but the retainer or spacer is smaller than normal. Some of the older shafts (like older Mosers) use different bearings. You'll need to verify what bearings you have now.

so since i have the Superior axle, are the new bearings specific to Superior axles only, or can i just buy "bearings for AMC20 ". Because I contacted Moser for bearings and they said that because I don't have a Moser axle he can't help me.
