Ive been searching for 2 days on different threads and cant seem to find my temp sensor, in the back of the gauge theres a purple wire but i cant find any purple wire pluged in. What i think is the temp sensor on the driver side has a green wire in it. There is an unplugged purple wire on the passenger side but wasnt long enough to reach the plug to try it out so i cut it and made it longer with some 10 gauge wire but nothing seemed to register. can anyone please help me by checking out my pictures and maybe pointing out where it seems to be located. I can tell the wires have been hacked and almost everything rewire so any help would be great to have thanks!

Rear corner of cylinder head, top. Next to driver side rear corner of valve cover.

Make life easier for yourself and remove the air cleaner.

The Chassis and Body subforum is a better place to post inquiries like this, FYI.

Is it in the same place for the 4 cyl?

So its not in any of the pictures I posted above? I keep searching for it but am coming up empty. Is there a way for me to move it to chassis and body?

Take off the air cleaner and all the way in the back there will be a sensor sticking up. I can't remember what color it is.

The purple wire on the passenger side goes to the single plug that comes out from your oil pressure gauge.

Are you sure because my oil pressure gauge is reading something. It seems to be working fine. Ill take off the air cleaner tomorrow thanks

Sorry, my drawing skills are very bad. That is where the temp. sensor is on my '79 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6.

This is where it was on my 83 cj

Yes.. If you look at the oil pressure sending unit there should be 2 things hooked to it. A 2 or 3 wire plug and the purple wire. The purple wire should have a 90 degree connector on it and plug into a singe screw looking pin.

I double checked the wiring diagram. Purple is for the oil pressure sender.. Purple with tracer is for the temp sensor.. I thought mine was red or green.

Jimbo, could you possibly get me a picture of where that oil pressure plug is supposed to go, it is with i believe with two red wires that plug into somewhere by the passenger side in the back but the purple wire wasnt pluged into anything and the oil pressure looks like its working fine

Well I found it way in the back after taking off the air filter like everyone saidi so thank you! I bought and replaced the sender, as well as the running a brand new wire straight from the sender to the gauge and still no activity so I'm pretty sure its the gauge thats bad, also the fule gauge is reading off so im just gonna buy two new gauges and check

Go here. Read the entire write-up. It's pure gold.

Buying stuff because you don't understand the process isn't going to bring you the desired results. CJ gauges are simple, old-school, and don't make much sense compared to todays set-ups.

Basic Troubleshooting for CJ gauges

I havent forgot about you.. Just havent gotten to the shop yet to take the pic

i grounded the sender plug and the gauge went to hot, so now i know the gauge works, I also did the ohm tester and all of it checked out. could it be the thermostat or just a bad sender i just bought yesterday?

If you put teflon tape on the new sender, that is most likely the cause of it not working. The sender gets it's ground through the head.

Have you tried the test light procedures in the link I posted?
