I noticed my gear shift on my 84 CJ7 was getting loose. It finally gave away and the shifter can be pulled freely off its base. Not good when you are shifting and its bumpy...

Here are the pics of what I am talking about. The last pic is the remnants of whatever was in there keeping the shifter tight to the square peg.

Anyone know what it is and how to get it, or a workaround?

Word of warning - that insulator is a PITA to install! Use plenty of dishsoap & it'll go, though.

Just went through that in January.

No problem , glad to help. Please continue to enjoy the site. :D

How about this one? Collins Bro's said they don't have it.

Locking rod from locking mechanism. There is a right and left part.

I broke the grommet and even if I could find it, the grommet was put on the steel rod, then the steel rod was stamped.

I'll look around when I have a chance later on today. Honestly I may even have one in my shed. :)

No luck on finding a new. I'm sure they are still in the old hard doors I have. Not sure if it matters but which door, driver or passenger? I'll dig one out tonite if needed. $10 plus shipping.

I don't know if it's driver or passenger side, but I need the one that bends to the "left". The first pic below bends to the "right" when held with the longer end in the bottom. I need the one that bends left.

If yours are still installed, be careful removing. That is how I broke the grommet on the first one...

I painted mine black with POR15...

Ok. Mine are still installed. I'll have to see which is which. We're basically gonna have blizzard type weather the next 2 days. How soon do you need it? I can bring the doors in from the shed after work and check it out when Im off on Sunday.

My door shells are in the body shop getting painted. I get them back next week, so no worries.

Thanks for helping me out Pete. Let me know if you have it and I'll get you out some cash ASAP.

Your shifter is more than just a support component for your vehicle. It makes your shift changing easy. You need to protect with the shifter bushing so that it will not be loosened.

Um... Brandon? That shifter bushing set you linked us to is specific to Hurst shifters. Not so many of us have Hurst shifters in our CJs... :)

hi just recently joined and saw this discussion...and ordered the part>Question how far down should the lever go once new bushing is installed? I still have a little play in it but cant seem to get it all the way down? or maybe it is? Fyi bought Jeep and it was real loose apparently guy before me had already removed lever and bushing>so i have nothing to compare it too>> thanks for any response Russ

Hi, Russ.

If you think maybe it might not be zonked home... then it's definitely not zonked home. When it's all the way in place, it'll click - it's a very positive click, and then it's heck to pay to get it to come back off. Yours doesn't sound like it's seated... so you have a choice right now - either leave it as it is, meaning it's fairly removable with some jiggling, or give it some more dishsoap & possibly a little trimming on that rubber insulator so it'll lock in place.

Really - they're a PAIN until they're locked; afterwards you can forget about it for the rest of your life.
