April 2012 Readers’ Rides
11 Homegrown RigsHot Shot
Freelance 4x4
Vehicle: 1984 Jeep CJ7
Owner: Chris Pearson, Las Cruces, NM
Tires & Wheels: 39.5-inch Iroks on American Racing Daytona wheels with Inner Air beadlocks
Suspension: Spring-over conversion with modified YJ leaf packs, 3⁄4 elliptical rear, Rancho RS 9000 shocks
Drivetrain: T-18 , Dana 300 with HD outputs and a 4:1 kit from JB Conversions, Dana 60 front, 14-bolt rear, Detroit Lockers, 4.88 gears
Performance Mods: 258ci, Comp cam, HEI distributer, Weber carburetor, K&N air filter
Other Doodads: Custom high steer, antiwrap bar, and cage, Corbeau seats, onboard air
Funniest Wheeling Incident: Long ago with 33s, I got stuck in what is an easy climb today. I had to spend the night with three buddies on a frigid rocky mountain, constantly starting the motor to keep warm. It was a long walk out in the morning. I ordered a winch the next day!
Does everything work the way you want?: After upgrading this Jeep since I was 15 years old, yes, finally!
Anything you would change?: Fully hydraulic steering
Anything to add?: Keep on putting out the most down-to-earth 4x4 publication on the market
