1976 CJ7 Jeep with a engine/tranny/wiring harness out of a 1988 s10 blazer 4.3l v6 with th700r4 automatic tranny and a cj7 Dana 300 transfer case with Novak adapter.
Complete wiring harness from the s10 blazer. Painted with HOT PINK Pearl paint with standard sized metallic halographic pink flakes. Painted by me -a newb. New rear, front and side three wire LED lights, New parts, new custom dash-by me And a lot of guidance from fellow jeepers and lots of prayers etc.... :p
I want to upgrade my CJ7 jeep's non-tilt column to a tilting column... I like the gm aftermarket columns with key tilt and switches but the internal shaft is different..

Can I change out my u-joint on the steering box to a different shaft so that I can use the aftermarke tilting column?

And like always, Many thanks in advanced. Please enlighten me...:notworthy:

Give Flaming River and/or Borgenson a call. If you're going to the extent of swapping out columns, I'd also swap out the steering shaft. Either one of those companies should/will be able to get the correct coupler.

I have one of those Borgeson units in my CJ, and have noticed that they use a lot of set screws to adapt their shaft on each end. I hope that there will be no issues with those and I did drill pockets for them to set into. I was quite impressed with their u-joint on the steering shaft though.

Good to know torxhead! I will check Borgeson out... I have no idea what I should ask or look for... Any suggestions? I also hope to keep the price down.. Realistically, what is the lowest I can expect to convert my column to a newer tilting, with key and ignition switch and turn signal switch.. Like the old one but mostly now with tilt... :notworthy:

Thanks for the information HackFabrication...
Any suggestions on what I should ask? Would you know a price range on this conversion approximately? I hope to change my non tilting to a tilting.. And keep the ignition switch, turn signal switch, and key in the column... Would you have part numbers for the coupler conversion? Many thanks! :notworthy:

Just for the record.

The tilt column from a 90 something XJ is pretty much a plug and play and it costs less than $100, the trick is to find one that still has the key. You get tilt, high and low beam canceling turn signals and wiper control in a package that says Jeep on the padded steering wheel.

OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH NICE!!!!!!!!! So, they also have the spline inner shaft? I went to the local junk yard and found some older cherokees but the ujoint/coupler.. Umm.. What ever the inner column shaft seats into looked different from my CJ7 's... I will have to check them out again... If the inner shafts are different, would the power steering box be the same? Or would I have to upgrade that too? I really don't want too... :p
Thanks for the suggestion and pictures. Would you have a picture of the steering shaft inside the engine bay on hand?

I am hoping you can make some sense out of this. I did use the newer top u-joint and the bottom of the old shaft . cut to length because the newer shaft is a bit too long. the bottom u-joint was from Flaming river. I suppose they could put together what ever shaft you needed at flaming river but a welding machine , a little creativity and the parts on hand should get you through. The most difficulty was setting the column angle to keep it away from the top of the brake peddle and making intermittent wipers functional. If you are going to go power steering be advised that the spline count on the gear box is different power to manual. Good luck.:chug:
