Rubicon or Not? Whiney Wusses? Chicks?Rubicon Or Non
I just read “Rubicon vs. Regular” in the May ‘11 issue. The entire article was great and right on the money. I particularly zeroed in on your comments regarding the 4:1 Transfer Case in the Rubicon. You are so right in stating that for many situations it’s geared too low and yet 4-Hi in many circumstances won’t do the job (needs more engine). For instance one problem I have had is that in bucking through deep snow or mud, 4-Lo will not allow enough ground speed to gain needed momentum and 4-Hi does not have enough power to get up any speed. I solved this by installing an Advanced Adapters Rubicrawler. Talk about versatility! The Rubicrawler gives you the best of both of worlds, a 2.72:1 ratio when the situation calls for it, a 4:1 ratio when needed, and a very deep crawling ratio with both levers in low range. Incidentally, the Rubicrawler can be used in low range with the main Transfer Case in the 2-Hi position giving you a two-wheel-drive low gear. I have actually had occasion to use it in this mode. No driveline mods are needed, it was easy to install, works flawlessly and of all the goodies I have added to my Rubicon four-door, the Rubicrawler is absolutely my favorite. It would also be a great addition to a Jeep with the standard 2.72:1 Transfer Case , it will add tremendously to the flexibility of the non-Rubicon. Greatest add-on since Warn brought out the Overdrive for the old Spicer 18 Transfer Case . Great magazine. Keep pissin’ off people occasionally. It always stirs up a good healthy debate!
