Auto Transmission

Big....... You need everything for whatever auto tranny you pick including bell housing and Transfer Case adapters depending on what you pick plus tranny mounts oil cooler shifter and drive shafts

In general, automatic transmissions are too long for a CJ5 ; your rear driveline will be too short.

^^ what he said, that's why jeep only used autos in CJ7 's. and 8's.

Here's one that has a 700R4 and a Chevy 350. Although it has 2 reversed 9 inchers to accomodate the driveshafts.

Metcage, did you decide what you are going to do?

I own 2 CJ7 's; both have engine, Transmission , and axle swaps, and both are road trip worthy.

My current project is swapping an automatic in my black one, which currently has an NV4500. I am not sure about a CJ5 drivetrain, but I can say my rear driveshaft is pretty short and my front driveshaft is lengthened. I would say you should be able to do this swap to a CJ5 , taking into account:
- Using CV joints for both driveshafts
- Limiting amount of lift
- Perhaps using a Ford 9inch high pinion rearend (I use this) at least

good luck!

Lots of CJ5 's and Flaties have autos. I trail run with many that have swapped the stick for an auto.
The setup will matter, to wich year and drive train you are running. Pre-72 will have a Spicer 18 Transfer Case that is offset and lower down on the rear output shaft. This helps for drive line angle issues.
If after 1972, you can get a CV (double joint) rear drive shaft and it will take care of the issues.
Also, many have swapped in V6's/I4's and move them farther forward to compensate for the drive line issues.
Yes, it can and has been done by many!

Mircrablue. U gonna be using the nv4500? I'm looking for one in mine, gonna bolt to a 350

Hello
I just bought an 1973 CJ5 with a AMC 304 and a Automatic Transmission . However it is not stock and I do not know what type it is. It seems to run fine except for the 4X4 shift (moves around - not clear three positions) is very sloppy. Seems to be a 4X4 that is all the way forward, and 2WD in the middle and neutral all the way back. Here are some pictures. If anyone can tell me what kind of Transmission it is that would be great. Also you can see how short the drive shaft is so the Auto Transmission has room.

As I dont see any adapter plate to the AMC 304 I'm going to guess that is a TF727 from a full size Jeep. I think the trasfer case is a Dana 20 ... (edit: My mistake - Dana 300 behind the tf727) my shifter is sloppy in the same way you describe yet works fine. I'm not sure if thats just how they are or if it's an old, worn out thing.

Congrats on the new Jeep.

Any more pictures of the rear driveshaft? How much lift do you have? If I'm correct about what units are under there it is a swap I may consider; if it works fine in your 73 should work in my 75 :)

Kilo19, nope; I'm not going to use it. But I am going to sell it together as a unit for a Ford project. It's the Dodge version of the tranny; I think you should go with the Chevy version so you won't need all those adapters!

Hello

Here are the pictures of the drive shaft. If you tell me what will help I will take the pictures for you. Hope it helps.

Are the Transfer Case and Transmission marked so I can see what is the model?

Thank you

Thanks for the tip. I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. But ive heard lots of good things about the 4500's

The last pic shows what looks to me like an adapter plate from the tranny to the Transfer Case and the Transfer Case looks like a Dana 20 . Why someone would adapt a tf727 to a Dana 20 rather than use a Dana 300 which would bolt up just doesn't make sense. Are you sure your V8 is an AMC engine (AMC 304 )? I'm just thinking it may be some other variety of V8 and automatic adapted to the Dana 20 .

More pics might help others help you... I think I'm just complicating the matter :D

Hello BC

How can I confirm if it is a TF727 with a Dana 300 are they marked?

Also I have several inches of lift.

Please see pictures below.

Thanks again for the help.

I wish one of the real experts on here would jump in and bail me out  but I'll give it another try. If you look here:

Torque Flite 727 3 speed automatic Swap Information

you can see how the tranny oil pan bulges out near the front on the drive-shaft side (can cause issues with the front drive shaft if the Jeep isn't lifted high enough). Your tranny has this bulge which I think is quite unique so I'm thinking there is a really good chance it is a TF727. Very tough tranny.

So they bolted to a Dana 300 which was introduced in the full size jeeps earlier than in the CJ's. It looks so much like a Dana 20 to me but over all they are similar. It is probably a Dana 300 . I thought "Dana 300 " was casted onto the back inside a triangle... but maybe that is only newer versions. Have a look at the back of the transfer and see if there is anything written on there.

And yeah, that drive shaft is short! Maybe that's why there is a drop block for the tranny mount. Hopefully that'll help :)

i have a 79 with a 727 and it works great tilt the rear end and new drive line and stock Transmission pan and straight to the front end ,,just like any thing elese through more money at it can send pictures dan in seattle

Hello BC

Does your 4X4 shift go
4WL
2W
N
4WH
?
I can not find a 4WL.

Thanks

Hi dabbrowne,

Have you figured out for sure which transfer-case you have?

I have a Dana 20 and it goes:

4wd-High
2wd
Neutral
4wd-Low

The TF727 and TF999 have the same pan, I believe. Anyway, here is a pic of a TF727 (left) beside a TF999 (right).
