So a buddie of mine is into Jeep commandos and tells me he has a d 44 with Limited slip out of a commando that he isn't going to use. I'm a T-18 Dana 20 combo from him as well so I figured he might know what he had.

Well long story short he dropped the axle off for me while I was at work. I'm thinking it might be a dana 25/ 27? But I think that is too old so kinda hoping someone knows what axle this is.

Thank you for any help

Very weak and unloved Dana 30 rear...used in 60's era Commando's. Almost worthless to anyone who doesn't need an exact axle for a restoration.

On the plus side if it is a Limited slip rear diff. it is most likely the sought after powr-lok. That is a nice diff for a front Dana 30 and may be the best of the LSD's next to a truetrac.

Thanx for the help
The top tag does say to use only Limited slip fluid. so maybe I can at least swap things around in my front 30.
I'll play it off as at least he meant well and is just not too bright.

Few people knew that they had a Dana 30 rear axle available. "Conventional wisdom" is that they were all Dana 44 's so he assumed "hmmm...these jeeps have Dana 44 's." Easy mistake. Half of the "experts" on here are unaware of the Dana 30 rear and most don't realize that the '69 - older Dana 44 was a much weaker and different design than the '70-newer rear Dana 44 .

"Conventional Wisdom", also known as the " well everyone knows that a Dana 44 is...." is responsible for more misinformation than an Iraqi government spokesman circa 2002.:D

The powr-lok is a clutch-disc type rebuild-able LSD and again it is sought after as a front Dana 30 diff. You can do some things to them to make them near locker-like in performance. The case & design is stronger than the later trac-loc diffs. If you don't use it you should be able to pop it out and sell if for a few bucks. Err, I mean they are worthless and I will generously take the diff off your hands to save you from having to go through the trouble of throwing it away and i will even go so far as to pay to have it shipped to me. Yes, I am that good of a guy....

Please don't generalize - you would be surprised how many "Experts" know that there were several versions of the Dana 44 .

Lol thank you. I'll consider dropping it in the mail, but I'll most likely put it in my front 30. Then I could just use the axle as my tub trailer axle until I have spare cash to get one without a pumpkin.
