lookin to lift my 79 CJ7 always had awesome luck in holes and river using 33's what size lift would be best in order tuck away my 33's as far as over all clearance and during flex gonna be running 33x12.5x15

4" if you don't want to cut the fender wells out.

:)I would agree with Old Dog.......3.5"- 4" ...........but if you don't need the 12.5 in tire which in most cases is an overkill anyway try the 10.5". Has the same height with better clearance inside and really no noticeable lack of traction.

Agreed. 3.5" minimum, 4" if suspension flexes well.

You cant "tuck a 33" on a Cj unless you cut the fenders. I have 32s and they barely squeek by the fender with my OME suspension.

:)85,

Your right with OEM suspension..............but we are talking about using a 3.5"-4" inch lift...........then you can.

:D

I don't think he meant to "literally" tuck that tire inside. He meant to run 33's on a CJ.

I'm a big fan of just getting the grinder out and making them fit with no lift. 2.5 with just a little trimming will work too. It all depends if your willing to cut or not. I think low jeeps look better and they are more stable. If you go more than 2.5 in lift you need to start worrying about drive shaft angles and steering.

You can always add larger bump stops to eliminate rubbing, then you can keep the lift smaller; less driveline issues that way.

So what do you guys think of the BDS YJ Spring Conversion? Thinking of running this with 1/2 inch shackles and a 1 inch body lift. (3 1/2 inch total.) Then add larger bump stops so I don't have to cut. Or it's their 2 1/2 inch CJ spring lift with 1 inch body lift. Looking to run max 33 inch tire.

If I went with the YJ conversion will I have to have a longer front drive shaft? They say the wheel base is increased by an inch.

Go BDS YJ conversion. the drive shaft should be fine. 4" lift no body or shackle lifts.. 10" wide tire will fit alot better.. most of your issues with the 33x12.5'' tire comes from rubbing the tire on the springs. the body lift will cause you to have a higher COG and the shackle can cause slop in the front end

Thank s for that advice? Had to think about that for a bit, I wonder his much the body lift alone raises the cog?

IMO the best lift to run 33s are Holbrook long leaf springs. I've been running them on my '73 for four years now. It's a bit involved, but if you're considering all the work involved in converting to YJ springs, then check out Holbrook Specialties. It'll net you 3" lift, super flexy and a great ride.

When I did mine, I dropped in a '77 T-18 at the same time so I had to change drive shafts. I had been running 31x10.5 with 1" Superlift springs. Never liked the ride, I realized later it was the front bumpstops I had. Too big. Anyways, it's been the best mod so far. That is 'till I finish compiling parts for a power steering conversion.

:)What size 33's did you use 12.5 or 10.5's ?? did you also do a sway bar?

and what shocks did you use?

I have some Holbrooks I just put on a 1965 CJ........most really like them.

I found a guy selling 5 brand new 33x12.50R15 Crushers mounted on vintage Renegade slots 15X7 and went for it. I figured if they were too wide, I'd sell the tires and go with a 10.50. So far so good, they rub the front spring a little on full turn but perfect for snow country. The shocks are Doestch Tech, I forget what size, if you can get a hold of a fork lift to cycle your suspension it'll help to figure out what length. The only potential problem is dropping both rear tires into a deep crack, the springs are so flexy I could use some limiting straps. I don't know what year they came out with sway bars, but my '73 never had 'em. I've got an extra leaf in my springs for the weight of a steel topper, doors, and a PTO on the bow, no problem tearing down the hiway to the trailhead.
I'm looking for a quick release strap so I can use my highlift jack in the field, you can jack to the end of the bar and never get the tire off the ground.

35's with a 3 inch suspension and a 2 inch body lift on mine. No rubbing here.

Did you go with wheel spacers, adjust your steering box, or just don't turn sharply?

Wheel spacers
