I am trying to get my '7 back on the road and am going to replace the factory exhaust for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

the exhaust on there now is booger welded so i will be replacing it from front to back.

what is the best method of replacement? can i just get some exhaust tubing with random bends and weld it up with the muffler?

the jeep is an '80.

or, should i just take to a muffler shop?

thanks.

nah.. I dont want to be mistaken for a Whitehouse resident.

I would do the muffler shop you trust tell them you 2.5 inch aluminized pipe mandrel bent

For a manifold back system with a Flowmaster my exhaust guy charged me about $165. Worth every penny.
2 1/4 is fine.

Sounds like a good price. Is that without a cat ?

does the '80 need a Cat or is it more of a good idea?

You don't need it. I think they reduce the gas smell a little and if you are concerned about climate change then...As for me I don't have them on any of my old cars.

thanks for the info.

Let a pro do the work.
Tell them you want the thickest walled pipe to be used.
If a 'cat' ain't needed-Don't use one......

Here in SoCal the prices are a bit higher than $165, but from manifold to rear bumper using heavy wall 2 1/2" pipe and Magnaflow muffler and cat was $700.

I'll never go back to California.

And the 'cats' here now have a serial # on them, just like a gun does.

Dont remember the exact number, but the cat was over $200 by itself. CA has us by the short hairs...

Even here where they don't do any emission testing when you get a new system they make you go with a cat unless you have something that predates a cat. I think its good to have because it is bad when you are behind someone without !

Cats have come a long way from when they were first used. They were big, heavy and restricted flow. Now you can get them small and they don't restrict flow at all.
