Can you guys suggest a good way to test shock absorber health? I have done the 'jump on the bumper' test front and rear with pretty good results.

I'm wondering if there is a more scientific or accurate way to determine if I need to replace them.

My rig is factory suspension and ride height. 31" tires.

Thanks!

Unbolt one end, if gas charged it should extend. If does not extend the gas leaked out. If none gas charged you should get resistance pushing or pulling in and out, if it moves easy it is shot.

Mine are oil shocks, I unbolted one end and was able to fully compress and extend it by hand. When compressed, it stayed compressed - didn't try to extend. Is that a bad sign?

If you had good resistance pushing it in,and pulling out it is ok.Yes oil only shocks will stay were you leave them. Gas charged shocks will try to stay extended. If you have no visible oil leaks, I would say there good. If you were able to push and pull them easy then they are bad.
