Hey everybody. Once more some questions for upgrade my CJ7 .
Now I have big problems with my walking gearbox if I spin the steering wheel without engine running. The gearbox have still the stock brackets ans I runn 33" tires.
This is extremely dangerous causeif I spin the steering wheel while driving I have a very bad steering. The gear box is in a good condition and have no leaks or something. Only the big way walking from right to left.
Now I'm looking for a heavy duty gearbox brackets. I found a few by some custom shops but the most won't ship to Germany or they are too expensive.
I hope some crawlers here can help me. I think some of your brackets are home made and also heavy duty bullet proof. I have no problems with welding or laser cut.
But I need some blueprints with measurements if you have.
Also need the gearbox brace from the box to the frame.
This aftermarket stuff you can buy in Germany is junkyard metal. Even more than bad and too expenive.

I hope some good mechanics could help me.
And the other problem is: Here in Germany we have a technical investigation. Every two jears. And if they see my walking box the will forbid me driving my Jeep for al long long time. You see I need heeeelp...

Re: Blueprint for heavy duty gearbix bracket and brace

You need to find someone that has a Big Daddy bracket, and see Dan77cj HD steering box mount post.
Someone will answer with dimensions sooner or later, I would but all I have at the moment is stock.

Re: Blueprint for heavy duty gearbix bracket and brace

I have one. Thanks.

Re: Blueprint for heavy duty gearbix bracket and brace

Make sure your frame/front crossmember do not have any breaks or cracks prior to bracing up that steering box. Those steering box braces from the frame to the bottom of the steering box help hold things in place also.

Re: Blueprint for heavy duty gearbix bracket and brace

No.The frame and crossmember are in a very good condition. Hope it helps. Now tody I found that the steering box in a worst condition. If I drill the steering wheel about 180 degree the gearbox with pitmanarm do nothing. Over 180 degrees it goes. Thats not good. I think I need a new gearbox. The steering from steering wheel to the gearbix is good. Also the U joints.

Re: Blueprint for heavy duty gearbix bracket and brace

When I replaced my steering box I was a bit disapointed due the different gears in the replacement box. I would suggest that you get yours rebuilt rather than replaced to eliminate any issues. It would be worth paying a few more dollars and taking a bit more time to get.

I have a second steering box in a good condition from a '86 CJ. This box has different connects from the hydraulic hoses. I have to buy new one. This week I bought some heavy duty parts to build a custom steering brace. This parts came from the Netherlands and awsome pricing. Look at this

Just a little bit welding and change the bix and the hd bracket.
I thing that it was....I hope so.:rolleyes

If you use the '86 box and buy new hoses youll also need the right pump cause it also uses a o-ring fitted supply line.

Yes thats right. But the pump is brand new and for a '83.
Does it fit the '86 steering box and hoses? I can't remember which hose is now inside. When did Jeep change the hoses with the O ring?

An '83 will work. That's what I have. IIRC it's '82 and up just to be sure. My '81 had the old style. Of course it has a '70s frame though so it's kind of Frankenstiened!
