This spring's project is a 2.5" lift on my '85. I also purchased a complete set of replacement bushing for the frame/body and all around. I don't have the courage for an off frame refurbishment, but I want to replace whatever bushings I can while I've got the jeep on the lift.

Question is: How do you lift the body from the frame in order to replace body bushings? should this happen after the lift kit is installed or while I have the axles disconnected?

You don't have to do the lift kit and the bushings at the same time. I just finished doing both on my jeep. The po had hockey pucks for a body lift on top of what looked like the original rubber body mounts with different bolts and washers throughout.

First I loosened the bolts of the body mounts on one side of the jeep. I then used a hi lift jack with a piece of 2x4 under the body on that side and raised it enought to be able to slide out the old mounts and slide in the new mounts. Next, I lowered it down enough to install the new bolts and washers. Then I lowered it down and tightened the bolts. Repeated on the other side.

Hope this helps.

Just finish your spring lift. Like Nickmimi said Losen all body bolts. take bolts out on one side only, replace bushings and then put new bolts in then repeat same steps on other side. Keep in mind passenger rear bushing by the gas take might be a sob to get to. You might have to lower the gas tank a little bit to get to it..

the only hard part is the "take the bolts out " part.:D

On the lift kit installation I ran into one seriously stuck bolt in the rear. Actually, the driver side leaf spring (fwd) eye bolt was stuck hard, as were the aft shackle bolts. All the time spent under there helps make sense of the advise on adding the body bushings. I have a 4x4 chunk of lumber set aside for the job. Any preferred jacking points or tips?

Thanks,
Dan

We just did this on my uncles 71 CJ5 this last weekend, very easy... Case of beer and parts.
:chug:

nickmimi had it right: Just do one side at a time, and as far as where to jack, we used the rock guard plates on the outside edges of body. And a block of 4x4 wood...

Uncle was surprised how much handling difference the kit made after all mounts are the same size and thickness and all bolts tightened.

Cheers man ~ JR

PS, jack carefully... and slowly... Just in case...
