looking to upgrade my steering box on my 76 cj as well as the column and steering shaft, i was taking a look at my box and its looking like i could prolly use a yj steering box,

what i was thinking of doing, since i have them here at home, is a xj steering column, yj steering box and then probly just get a custom length steering shaft made if i need to, or find one that fits,

anyone ever do this kind of swap?
nick

Just pull the column, shaft, and box from an XJ. You could even use a box from a S-10, or Camaro/Firebird, Caprice, etc. They all present the same issue for you. Your power steering pump and hoses use English fittings. All the mentioned boxes use metric fittings. You just have to get a new pump and hoses

Is there a direct bolt in power steering box for a CJ5 from another vehicle?

:)Plenty of posts on that subject already..............what type of Jeep do you have? AMC was already using the Saginaw Gear box and most were the HD version and most should be a direct bolt on............Do you have manual steering now?

Thanks for responding...I already have power steering, but the steering box is in bad shape. I was looking to replace it with a used one, but it is hard to find a cj for a donar. I was hoping to not have to pay the 200 dollar plus price for a new one. I just would like to know a donar vehicle besides a cj that would have a direct bolt on. Thanks :)

Scothood............:)You need to update your member profile on your equipment. No one knows the type of vehicle you have?

Ok..I updated my profile...I was reading some of the forums and the one about using a Hummer H1 power steering box caught my attention. Will it really just bolt right up to my CJ5 ? Or it sounds like a 80 or later waggy would be a good donar. Thanks for the help:eek:

I JUST put a H1 power steering box in mine. I can't really comment on how it functions because I am have the new lines put in today. Should get it back today at some point.

It is much bigger than the stock one. I think the outer diameter is something like 4.25 inches on the H1 versus 3.75 inches on the stock CJ box. It bolted right in.

Did you have to make new hoses or would the original cj hoses work? Also is that a drop pitman for a cj or something else? It looks great in the picture!

:)The Hummer H1 box is none other than the standard Saginaw series 800 HD 4 bolt steering gear...........this gear has been used in different variants for 30 years. AMC Jeep also used this box on many applications throughout the 1980's......
If there is any difference it is in the input shaft which some are un-splinded and the valving internally............be it varible valving or standard.
Any series 800 casting #76 box can be rebuilt and valved to your spec's.
Look under your CJ you probably already have one.

Thanks...I know were a 80 wagoneer is and could rob the box off of it!

:)Scot,
Before you go rob one look under yours............it may already have the right box. From under the bumper look up at the housing and just forward of the large round cover in the front there is a large 76 cast into the box. The numbers are stacked one on top of the other. If you are already have the correct gear get yours rebuilt.
And if it is not then before you go rob that used one check it out also, but in either case whatever you find get it rebuilt..........steering is nothing that should be taken lightly. Talk to your re-builder about valving to suit your driving habits.

One last thing on these exotic Steering boxes that have been mentioned in order to get full benefit one must also match the pump with the gear........otherwise without the pressure the gear will just be another gear.
FYI , This picture is from a 1980 CJ5 never been touched ....came with a series 800 box.

Well its in and working well. I needed to wait to get a new shackle hanger before the final install. Plus, I didn't have the power steering lines until today either. Still haven't driven it though. Installing mechanical gauges tomorrow.

Tarry, I have heard about matching the pump to the box before, what would I need? A whole new pump?

Canuck:

:)Well when your ready ask away on your steering questions.......

If you have a manual gear it is a Saginaw gear box..........most CJ's and Jeeps to current production are using about the same basic configuration. The factory box for that era which is still the one most used is the Saginaw 800 series Power gear box. The mounts should fit between the two but the 800 box is a 4-bolt mount while the manual was a 3 bolt mount.......although you can bolt a 4-bolt to a 3 bolt mount just leaving out the 4th bolt.........I personally like to change the mount but that's me. The power gear box is a little longer so the steering shaft will need to be shorter. If you already have power then its more than likely a 800 series gear and just get it rebuilt.
