1973 CJ5
I recently bought a 1973 CJ5 with a Dana 30 in the front and a Dana 44 in the rear. Drum brakes all the way around. I am wanting to put discs all the way around. I was wondering what year/model/make I would need to look for? I would prefer things to just bolt together.

well the front is easy. Just find a later model CJ with a disc brake, narrow track axle and install it in place of your current axle. As long as the gears are the same, that is. If they aren't, just change the outers (from the knuckle out).
You or may not have to replace the proportioning valve either way.
The rear is a lot harder to find a bolt in solution. there are kits out there, but I haven't researched them enough to answer you about them.

Congratulations on your new jeep. I found this site which might help with converting your front brakes. Project Pieces and Parts - Front Axle.
Try searching Google for more info and I am sure there are lot's more people on here that have faced this problem and are willing to help you out. I have disks on my front and drum on the back and am happy with my brakes but I am running 31 inch tires, not sure where you want to go with your jeep where you need more stopping power.

Cheers, Brian :chug:

I would not suggest swapping an entire axle just to get disc
there are many a disc upgrade kits out there a good search online will bring up many
there are also a few that you can use the existing knuckles and spindles with. problem with Drum brake spindles are the inner races are smaller than the disc setup, but some kits take care of that. I use a system based on GM truck brakes, the disc bracket is a bolt on, the disc are designed for a 3/4 ton truck and it works great, all you need to do is get longer lug bolts.
I did my fronts in 2 hour time.

do you by chance recall what parts you used and from what year/make/model to convert your disks? I am looking to go to the salvage yard to pick up alot of the parts.

I did not convert the same jeep you are
so my advice is for you to do a bit of research
do a search and find a conversion you like and call them up with your axle and see what they say.
I mean I can give you stuff for my axle, but not yoursif you want to go with Jeep brakes you are going be changing the knuckles and hubs and spindles et el et el. I think the gm set up fits d44s and d 30s and does not require such work, Like I said, best advice can give you is find a conversion you like, and then ask the guys selling it, they are the ones who have engineered the setup.
a search on google like this disc brakes Dana 30 brings up a lot of articles and a few links to kits.

Let me know what you end up doing/getting the parts from because im looking to do the same thing. i have a 77' CJ5

you can source Jeep brakes from a junk yard to fit those axles or you can et a retro kit.
I put GM truck brakes all the way around using the dana adapter, I got complete kits from Herm the Overdrive guy, look in the link section or just goggle him, his kits are all inclusive which makes it real nice.
the thing you will need to do once you swap out is pop out your back pressure valves (residual valves) so your brakes work properly and do not sieze up. Oh herm takes into account the drum brakes have different bearings than the disk spindles and includes them.
I love my conversion, good luck
