Hi all - new to the forum and need some help. Restored a 1982 Jeep CJ7 . In the restoration I replaced the brakes - calipers, cylinders, stainless brake lines, master cylinder and proportioning valve. After driving it for about 3 weeks - the proportioning valve started leaking where the dust cover covers the metering "pin". I took the valve apart - and of course messed up the brass hex head on the metering pin so I couldn't return it. I ordered a new valve. Again after three weeks - this one has started leaking also - same place. Any ideas if these may just be defective parts - or do I have something else going on? I have a video of it leaking if anyone wants to see it so you know what I am referring to.

Interesting, a while back I purchased a prop valve for my '86, a Crown I think it was. Anyway, it developed a slight leak at the same location as yours did. It did not seem to affect brake performance, I left it alone and eventually it quit leaking.

I ordered a adjustable one you cut inline for mine from Summit racing
never have had a problem with it

I am back with the same woes. I have replaced the proportioning valve 7 times in the last 2 years. All of them have started leaking out of the black rubber cover on the pin in the front. I've tried to leave it alone to see if it would stop leaking - but it hasn't so I have replaced them. When I rebuilt this jeep I replaced the Master cylinder, brake booster, brake lines with stainless steel, calipers, rear cylinders, and proportioning valve. The fluid is clear so it is not contaminated as it has been replaced pretty well every time I have installed a new valve and bled the brakes. I need help getting a manufacturer that has a valve that doesn't leak - or someone whe can point me to the cause of this so I can correct it. Thanks....

Sounds like you have a "combination brake valve" which has a Proportioning valve built in...........Some cars used those to make sure pressure was applied 1st to the rear drum brakes before the front disc brakes. It also had a brake warning sensor that perhaps lit a warning light.

I did not see anything telling us what you have........disc / drum or disc/disc?.......a modern proportioning valve that has the residual valves built in eliminated the need for the Combination section that is giving you fits. I would look at changing that.

A little more info on what you have would be helpful.

:D:D:D:D

An '82 CJ does in fact have that combo valve, another option for you Wiley would be to have it professionally rebuilt which is probably the best option, which I think is the best way after comparing remanufactured and rebuilt oem over the years. It does have a lot to do with the quality of the shop you find to do the work also.
