have an 83 CJ7 ,all of a sudden the brakes are acting funny.when i initially hit the brakes the pedal is fine but within a few seconds starts to get soft and will eventually go to the floor.its not leaking fluid any where i can see,im stumped

is the resivoir level dropping?? I would suspect the master cylinder.

I agree with IO

I have the similar problem..At 1st press padle is very soft and works good but eventually it gradually hits the dead end . But at the same time it is very sensitive.
1) check the master cylinder and caliper cylinder ratio.
2) check the rubber pipe attached to brake lines it might be to old.
3) valves ratio .
4) it might be the gap btw wheel drums and the brake pads . try to adjust them or change the drum if necessary.
5) The route of brake lines . if they are passing thru the are which gets hot like exaust pipe , it might be heating up brake fluid.

Listen to IOPort and OldDog. A couple of the more experienced jeepers on this site.
It's a problem with the hydraulics not the mechanics of the brakes.
It's the master cylinder.

Yep, I've seen it a hundred times when I worked in the garage.

Internal leakage of the master cylinder. Check for pits in the piston bore. Brake fluid likes to absorb moisture and pit the bore. I switched to silicon fluid and end of failing master cylinder.

We just replaced the Master Cylinder last night on my Uncles CJ.

Same problem, and fixed the solution...
