!983 cj5. 258 engine 4sp stock, 2009 h3 hummer.
1983 CJ5 . Calif smog. Behind the drivers side rear fender well is a small plastic container that is part of the emissions. Its has 2 lines from the tank and It looks like a fuel filter and it does have a little fuel in it. I know its emission stuff.Just curious as what it does. Any ideas?

charcoal canister ?

Charcoal canister is on the drivers side front fender. Since the lines have fuel im thinking maybe excess fumes.

It's a liquid check valve. It captures vapors from the tank and redirects them back to the engine to be burned rather than leak out into the environment.

Only reason I know is I filled my tank and parked on a hill. Gas was pouring out the top of the tank because those two lines were cracked and broken. Whoops. 15 minutes and about 1/2 gal of gas later, good to go. I've attached the pages from the TSM that discuss this little beauty.

nctom. Thanks for the info. I guess i wasnt to far off. Did you need to have hose clamps on the lines to keep from leaking? I know mine do not have any. Need to get a new valve tomorrow.

Mine had clamps so I reused them. It's a low pressure system so you might get away without them.

Did some searching and found out these check valves are very hard to get. Found a jeep part number and hoping I can locate one.

I don't think this is just Cali. I think everybody got one. I think this also has something to do with the roll over check valve too. like a tank vent that doesn't dump gas if you go dirty side up.

smog
sheesh
do you guys see why I mess with the early stuff now? No Smog

Smog is so bad on an 83 its like Los Angelos under the hood. I need a manual choke and there is hardly any room around the choke plate to install it.

The smog equipment is a real pain, but I know the smog in L.A. is no where near as bad as it was growing up there in the '50s and 60's. I remember smog days going to school where we weren't allowed outside recess. Running around outside would make your eyes and throat burn something fierce. Had the auto industry been more responsible about engine efficiency back then I don't think we would be in the fix we are in. I do believe we can have a cleaner burning engine without all that :dung: though. It would be nice to change the laws to address the actual pollution that comes out the exhaust rather than what gets bolted on to the engine. Hmmmmmm

More smog rules. Was going to put on a manual choke today and found out I cant do it. If I put on the manual choke it doesnt meet smog rules and will not pass. If i wasnt going to sell it i would not care. Can you imagine that. That liquid check valve i was informed about. Not to be found.:censored:

Your Guide To Used Parts

Over the years we've been in and out of a fair number of junkyards, and we know our way around a pick-n-pull. We've also run some stories over the years that highlighted a few boneyards. We tend to keep tabs on the best places to getparts for our Jeeps, and in keeping with the cover theme of this issue, decided to share our master list with you. Not all of these are straight-up junkyards, but used parts are available from any company on this list.
