I bought and am restoring a 79 CJ7 Renegade with a AMC 304 and I want to lift it and put some bigger meats under it. Im looking at either a 2.5in rough country or a 3in Black Diamond lift. I really dont want to have to go any higher because I dont want to replace the pitman arm drop the Transfer Case . But I would like to fit 33x12.50s on it because 31s just dont look big enough for a CJ7 . I will drive it mostly on the road and some light mudding but nothing like rock crawling that will really flex the suspension. It will also have a 8000 to 10000 pound winch so the front will have the weight of the motor and winch. Does anyone else have this kind of set up or know if this will work?

You can fit 33s with a 2 1/2 in. lift. I had that set up on my 85 CJ7 . Id go with the 3 in. Black diamond lift. BDS makes good lift kits. You wont be sorry. Also if youd like a little more room you can get cut out flares or use Tj flares.

So you never really had any problem with scrubbing? Did you have the V8 and run a winch jw because of the added weight.

I run a V8 and a winch with a 4" lift and 1" BL with 33's, off road when flexed the rear only misses by an inch with stock wheelwells. The front has a little room left.
Some people get by with 2 1/2 or 3" on the street but need to trim the wheelwells for offroad.
hope this helps a little:chug:

6 cyl. soft top with fibeglass 1/2 doors no winch. Odds are you'll need to trim some sheetmetal.

I like the 2" suspension and 1" Daystar body lift combo ( body bushings probably need replacing anyway) and if you need a little more then go with the TJ flares. Oh and in case most didn't know stock YJ shackles will give you about 3/4" lift also... So good luck and hope you enjoy your Jeep

The problem isn't just the lift it'll be wheel backspacing also.
To little or to much and you rub the suspension or fender.
I had 33x14.50x15 Super Swamper TSL's and barely rubbed the
suspension with a 4" lift. 33x12.50x15 woulda been perfect.

You dont really need to worry about it hitting up front, so the extra weight isnt much of a deal. the back is the big concern i kept seeing. I ended up cutting a good deal out of my rear corners, but i have 36's so that makes a little difference. I have a 6 inch lift overall though.
