Here is a tech Question from Guillaume P., a reader from Canada. He has a Jeep, and a tight budget and is looking for our input. What would you suggest?
I got a bit of a problem here;I own a lifted 1995 xj that is my daily driver/weekend fun rig.I'm on a VERY restricted budget, sometimes I can save a small 3-400$ one or two times a year to "invest" on my jeep.Question is:what should I get first?I already have a lift and kick-<-BAD WORD-> m/t tires but I "need" to get something new on it.I really want to put a locker up front but its pretty expensive, and skid plates/winch/bumpers would be pretty cool too.A snorkel or better shocks wouldn't hurt either. What would you guys concentrate on first?I don't do any rockcrawling, because It's a daily driver curse, there are no sand pits either anywhere near, so I mostly wheel in deep snow or mud.Go Canada! If you have any advice that could help me make my wife hate me more,uh I mean get my Jeep to go further,it would be pretty appreciated.
-thanks guys
Guillaume,
I think you have two options, a winch bumper, or a locking differential. The winch and bumper combo isn't especially cheap, but it will give you truck that aggressive off road look, and will be a great safety net when snow wheeling. Plus your wife will be able to see it there every day, giving your truck that off road look.
A locking differential is also a great upgrade, but this one isn't something your wife will see, which may be good. Getting a good locker in the front or back of your truck will definitely help it off road.
Adding shocks would be great, if it's not currently riding very well. I don't think the snorkel would be very useful in your terrain as I doubt you're taking your daily driver into waste deep mud, and if so, you better have some lockers and a winch.
