What do our CJ afacinados know about these jeeps? The reason I ask is, I found a placard on the drivers side attached to the side next to the seat which says "Mfg by AMC (Canada) Feb 1980". This would explain why the VIN tag under the hood does not say Toledo on it. I haven't seen much about these jeeps, any info would be great.

AMC Brampton assembly plant. It ran from 62-86 assembling cars and Jeeps before Chrysler bought it. I believe the CJ ran from 79 up.

Thanks Posi, I Wiki'd Brampton and you are right jeep cjs 79 til AMC was bought out, then closed. I didn't realize that was possibility, as this was a Texas plated jeep before I bought it. Not that really mattered I guess. Also since this was before the first digit in the Vin is the country code, I think that started in 81 or 82.

LG - I guess I'm in the canadian jeep club now, eh!

The standardized 17 digit VIN came into place in 1977, IIRC.
Mine starts with a 1.

All 79 Silver Anniversary CJ5 were assembled at the Brampton Ontario plant which started around the first of the year 1979. Many CJ's were still built in Toledo up until November 1985 when AMC shifted all CJ production to the Brampton plant.

the 17 digit started in 1980 prior to that it was 13

:ty: Posi.:chug:

Mine has a 2/85 build date. I bought it in March. It was made in Canada.

Must have been later in 1980 as mine is 13 with the first letter a J.
Is the no tailgate a canadian thing or just cost cutting at both plants?

Tailgates were optional on CJ5 's. My 76 CJ5 (built in Toledo) came without a tailgate. When I replaced the body, I opted for a tailgate:

Not that this has to do with CJs, but all the 87' - 91' YJs were all made in Brampton, Canada! Loved my 89'.

and many Rambler/AMC cars were assembled (1961-78/85-88) well before Jeep (1979-92).

jeeps havebeen made so many places, Brazil, Canada, and even Mahindra had an assembly plant in China one time, or was that Japan, oh well they have even been made in the far east

My '79 CJ5 (manufactured 9/78) has a maple leaf sticker that has "Canada NSVAC Transport 987" on it. I'm assuming, based on what I've seen online anyway, that I have a Canadian built Jeep. Would that be correct?

Not sure if you still have the sticker on the leftside of the tub by the door opening, it should have were it's made.(kind of hard to see ) Also the VIN tag under the hood won't say Toledo Ohio. There is list I found that had serial number ranges of jeeps that were made in Canada by year, but I don't remember were I found it.
Welcome to the Canada jeep club.
