'84 CJ7 258 4spd. Dana 300. Fiberglass tub. In storage for 20 YEARS... Got 'er running in six hours... Just sold my soul to the guy at the auto parts store,
2013 Cherokee... Bone stock....
Hi guys. I'm new to the forum but not to CJ's. I've owned mine for years, but the old girl spent 20 years in storage.... Recently the federal reserve note gods were generous with me, and I dragged her "home" three weeks ago. Her new home is at an airport my dad runs, and I am blessed with a lift so I don't have to crawl around on the ground to work on her...

I go there on the weekends, do all the work on it I can, and come home and buy new parts. (2.5 hour ride one way...)

The first day, I had her running in six hours. (20 years in storage.) dragged her around the airstrip with the tractor to free things up.... Fresh gas... Freed up carb float.... And she RAN... NOT WELL..... But I drove it that day....

Since then, I have replaced the radiator and starter, (known problems when parked) pulled both diff covers... Rear was perfect, front had something resembling oil colored pig snot come out of it.... ATTEMPTED to reattach front pumpkin breather fitting to exclude further pig snot inducing contaminates... I will monitor that carefully.

My CURRENT BIG ISSUE is the carb.... When parked(in 1993) she wouldn't idle for :dung:, and I was an expert three foot driver. While up there in PA, i drove half an hour to reach a cell phone signal, consulted the almighty inter web gods, returned, cleaned two idle jets, and the old girl idled better than when I parked her... But SUDDENLY, every time I touched the gas, she spit, sputtered, and almost died.... A quick disassembly of the top of the carb showed that the accelerator pump diaphragm rubber tore.... Still driveable if you have enough finesse with the go pedal...

Here is my question: guy at auto parts store says he needs numbers off the carb to get me a rebuild kit for the carb. I'm 99% sure it's a Carter. The Jeep is an 84 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . Would anyone know exactly what carb that has on it so I can order a rebuild kit without driving 2.5 hours to get some numbers off it?

Lord knows I have plenty of other stuff to do.... Every single brake line needs to be replaced, all fuel lines look "crunchy", fuel tank leaks..... But I like driving her on Sunday after spending all night Friday, all day Saturday working on her... Before heading home...

Anyone out there think they can help?

Hard to say really because they're all different lol. But I'll go out on a limb since I have an 84 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and say this one:

Carter BBD 2 Barrel Carburetor Kit
AMERICAN MOTORS (6) 1976-88
JEEP (6) 1977-90
Carter BBD 2 Barrel Carburetor Rebuild Kit | Chrysler & Jeep

Nice thing about this place is they will refund you within 30 days minus shipping. The other option is any of the box stores...napa and such often have this rebuild kit in stock since the same carb was used on many vehicles.

Good luck...worse case is you end up returning it and doing something else to the Jeep that weekend. :chug:

Lol...I think I kinda missed your question. You want the # that will give you the correct carb kit. I don't know that much about Carter carb #'s, but from my own reading they are not all the same. But the # on mine is 8384. Which you can give to get the correct (hopefully) carb kit. For example, this # pulls up the same carb kit I linked above if you go to Mike's carb page. There's also a bunch of reading on identifying carbs and the differences in carters etc.

You can also look here for your exact Jeep options/engine/year/etc and see your carb #.

Which will give you these #'s:

8360, 8362, 8363, 8364, 8366, 8367, 8372, 8383, 8384, 33001708, 33001708

Sorry for the multiple posts lol...that's what happens when I start going through my Jeep bookmarks at 130am

I don't care about the multiple posts! I appreciate the help!!!

Hi folks.
It's been quite some time since this post.
I disassembled my carb , and which one of the followings is my carb number now?

They want the number that is on a metal tag that should have been held by one of the float bowl bolts. I don't see it here.

I am the second owner and the tag is missing.I think the PO trew it away. The carb was wearing signs of some punishments. There were a series of cracks to the manifold side of the throttle body.I mended them. The screws of the dust cover over the pump and metering rods lifters had been replaced by sheet metal screws. Two different shapes of gaskets between the throttle body and the main body were over and under.etc.So I had to dismantle it to rebuild.
BTW:
I have a spare Carter BBD with stepper motor and sol -vac solenoid, but no wiring in the wiring system to hook them and no sensors etc.Does that stepper motor cause any problem under these conditions if I put this second carb on?
Or do I have to make some adjustments on the stepper motor before installing it on ?
The current carb has only the electric choke and a das pot.

Take all of that to a GOOD auto parts store and let them figure it out. Or, give Mike a call - he is very knowledgeable or buy a remanufactured carb that will fit your setup and solve all of the problems. Or at least eliminate a couple of them.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I am posting from Turkey, and putting a hand on some carb parts is quite hard at this side of the Ocean. And I can not easilly afford a new carb ordering from the States .The shipping cost alone is a used carburetor price.

Opps! Sorry didn't catch that one. I would still try to get in touch with Mike's. I know he has a lot of uTube videos on carbs. Maybe you could get an email address and send him the pictures.:D

Don't worry,Peanut Butter.No problem.
You mean Mike's Carburetor Parts by Mike?
Well,I ordered jets and some gaskets from him,and have already got them.
What I have to do now is to assamble and adjust the carb. The mending -the-cracks part looks fine and I think it will work.If not ,however ; Then I should look for a used and workable carb.
