Ok, so I finally got te lift situation figured out and is going on this week. But now she is doing the dying when slowing down, rough idle. I'm taking it that these jeeps (84 Renegade , AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , 5 speed, all stock) are Famous for this problem.
My question is, will simply replacing the carb with a new one solve this problem? Or am I going to have to get crazy with it? I have already researched the nice fuel injection swap and that's out of the price range so does anyone have a good suggetion?

Id make sure that the idle is set right, timing, tune components first.

Not sure if your jeep has it, but some manufacturers started using something called a dashpot. Its a small solenoid that will be bolted onto the carb and connected to the throttle linkage. It will hold the throttle plate open just a hair for a few seconds when you suddenly let off on the throttle. Might see if it has one and if its operating correctly.

As far as replacing the carb to fix the idle problem, it might fix it but if thats not the cause of the problem, its an expensive part to throw at it.

After turning off, pull the air cleaner, grab the throttle cable and look down in there to see if you are getting two steady streams. Venturi are probably clogged, you can drill them out and it will help. amc carter carb fix . They also clog right where the spray comes out. So get a needle or something and clean up all the little holes and ports while you have the top end apart and are drilling out. This is very simple and does not involve removing the carb or anything. Takes about ten minutes if you know where everything is.

A rebuild kit is only about $15 at Oreilly's.

Lots of guys give up on them and the MC 2100 seems to be the carb of choice. I dinked with mine enough that it runs clean. If you clean venturi or rebuild make sure you change your fuel filter too. I also pulled my tank and cleaned out and made sure it was good all the way through.

X2 This is very good advice I've done the drilling of the venturi and haven't had trouble with idling, one last thing also to check is for dry rotted vaccum hoses or vaccum plugs if you have taken all the smog eq. off. I had a couple of plugs dry rotted and was sucking air causing a very lean condition at idle. Take some carb cleaner and spray around the base of the carb, hoses, vac plugs, if it reves higher you have a leak.:)

X2 This is good advice I've drilled out my venturi tubes, rebuilt the carb. The only other thing to check if the vacuum hoses, and vacuum plugs if you have taken all the smog eq, off. Take some carb cleaner and spray around the base of the carb to see if the gasket is leaking, also spray around the vacuum hoses, vacuum plugs if your engine reves higher you know you have a leak.:)
