Just finished changing high pressure power steering hose on my 80 CJ5 . What a pain. I ended up taking grille and radiator out to get to steering box end.

Tell me about it, I did mine about 2 months ago! I fought like hell but finally got the hose and bolt mounted to the top of the power steering.

The key is to have the majority of your Cj disassembled before you do this job. :D

Yeah I did that one as my line was splitting... Still didn't fix my power steering leak!! Doh!

I had a 1inch body lift at the time that allowed just enough room to get it done, but it took quite a few tries and some cut up knuckles!

holy cow we are fighting this today. What a PITA.

Does the radiator and the grille have to come out? We tried dropping the box and the sway bar to get more room but no go.

Sure removing the radiator will give you more room, but I was able to get it on my stock '86 without removing anything. It was a PITA though!! I had a buddy of mine helping me, thought it would take a quick 30 mins or so and ended up fighting it for probably 2 hours. I don't remember any tricks either, sorry I'm not of any more help. You can get it but it's tough, I remember cursing myself for not removing the radiator though.

Removing the radiator did make it easier to get to and since we wanted to replace the heater hoses and lower radiator hose anyway...it made sense. What really helped is loosening the return hose fitting so you weren't fighting that as well, you could swing it out of the way. It does not need to come out completely, just loosen enough to position the pressure side.

I am in the process of replacing the pressure side on a 83 CJ5 that came with a 4 cyl and at some point in it's life a 6 was added. I found this out after I bought a hose for the 6 cyl and it had way too many bends compared to the one I removed. The line at the box was rusted so bad that turning the fitting just twisted the steel line off.

Replacing the new line is still a work in progress and a real PIA so far. I decided to drop the steering box and the rear bolt broke off and it's directly under the spring so more things to remove to drill it out. It looks like the grill and radiator might have to also come out. :bang:

I cut my pressure line then went to local hose shop had fittings put on line coming out of box and pump the had a hose made to fit ... when hose goes out next time.. will only take 5 minutes to pull out instead of 1/2 day lol ..Will take a pic of it ..

Here is pic of my power steering hoese on my jeep and wifes jeep

Well I removed the Radiator and already had the steering box unbolted and removed the 90 degree bend of the grill right over the steering box. The new lines are on and I hope never ever to do this again, hard to believe these lines are such a PIA. :censored: :)
