What do you mean by 'went out'? What is it doing?
Are you still using the OEM 2-piece axles?
Need more information.

So why not just install a 1 piece axle kit?

"Tripped out", do you mean stripped out?

X2 on what mtnwhlr sez

1 piece axles are the way to go. Look at Moser brand.
Why replace the 'read end' when that is not the issue?

Sounds to me like it's more about the axle being wider than stock, than it is about fixing what is broken. Like a mud runner or a rock crawler with big wheels flailing mud and dirt around.

If you want to go just a little bit wider and a bolt in try a set from a 82 to 86 CJ. Not much wider but a little.

Yep, that's the only bolt in swap I'm aware that's wider than his stock axles.

Is he planning on swapping the front and rear so the stance matches? If not, then he has to make sure the new rear has the same gear ratio as his existing front. Even he swaps a complete set, He will need to pay close attention to the gear ratio, especially if his '79 has the 3 speed, and even more so if he has bigger than stock tires. His '79 came with either 3.54 or 4.10 gears (3.54s by far more common). For 82-86, 6 cylinders has 2.72 or 3.31 gears, and by my experience 2.72 are much more common. If he can find a set out of a 4cyl from 82-86, then they should have either 3.54 or 4.10 gears.

edit: An Early Bronco (77 and older) rear will physically bolt under a CJ, but it would be set up for spring over and DC driveshaft. And would be about 4 to 5 inches wider than the front

You could also fix what's broken and order shallower back spaced wheels with wheel spacers and get the wider trac look... Also depending on tire size...

Be careful - there are good wheel spacers, and bad ones...
