So after having a friend that owned CJ8 , I've always found then interesting. After researching them a little I've find that non rustbuckets sell anywhere from 12k to 30k, while rusted ones sell for 4k-6k, at least in the two areas that I have lived and looked (south east Georgia and now upper state new York).

This one seems to be the only one in my area (read 8 hour drive) for under 6k.

UPDATE running rare 1985 jeep scrambler all original

Do they really sell for this much? I'd love to own a scrambler and I've already gotten the household-6's (wife's) approval for every spare penny for the next 10 years. I just have no idea how much this is worth. Normally for another vehicle I'd offer him 3k and try and haggle it to 3.5k tops, but that's quite the difference from what he's asking.

He does claim it's running and that he does have another tub( which may be just as Rusty), so that is in his favor. Going to try and find out how drivable it is while I wait for an opportunity to drive down to look at it.

Trying to get thoughts on this cliff I'm about to jump off. I know the body is shot, and I may just replace it on a year or two if I get it.

Thanks for the advice,
Tidife

New York + snow plow = rust everywhere on everything! Even at $3k, you are going to have to address everything. I have found that if you are willing to drive around, and have patience, you will be able to get a much better deal.

Offer him $3k, worst he says is no, but do it in person. Anytime someone makes a sight unseen offer to me over the phone/email, my answer is always NO, but if a person makes the effort to come out to take a look I'm more willing to "deal". Last I saw, a new repo steel body for a 8 was in the $4k neighborhood

They didn't make many CJ8 Scramblers, they're not as plentiful as the the CJ5s or CJ7s.

In that respect, you're buying a vehicle that's not as common. So the prices can be higher sometimes than a comparable CJ. Fortunately they share many parts with the CJ7 , so that can save you some money there. :-)

I found this on Wiki (not sure how accurate it is knowing them) if it's of interest:

Year Production
1981 8,355
1982 7,759
1983 5,405
1984 4,130
1985 2,015
1986 128

...

I saw that one doing my daily Craigslist searches. I'd pass on that one. If the sides and floors are rusty it's go to be tougher to save the tub cause the supports are probably gone as well. A solid used tub goes around $2000-$2500. They aren't easily found though. Steel repros are around $4500 and fiberglass ones fall in between. Hold out and keep searching. Better candidates will pop up. :chug:

Yeah I just talked to the guy and the extra tub is pretty much scrap metal. So will probably pass on it. Was looking at a CJ7 in my area as well but found out its rusted as well.

Not to sure on how bad that is. Emailed the guy last week and he never responded so i thought he sold it.

I would rather avoid a CJ5 just because i want a hard top and finding one seems to be a pain. CJ-7s i do like, and CJ-8s obviously. Maybe I'll get lucky in the next couple weeks.

Let me know what you think about that CJ7 . He initially listed it at 6500 and now hes down to 5200.

So not to sure how my last post came across, was outside and using my phone to send it and was -10.

Just to clarify, i Do like the CJ5 but most I've seen are soft top and it gets pretty cold out. I also like the idea of more leg room and an easier time getting in and out of the CJ7 .

I like the jeep I posted, but I'm not sure on how serious that rust is. I'm told it passes inspection for safety in New York, but it would still need attention.

Being on a military post, I do have Access to a garage, lift bays and non lift bays with welding, and a paint booth. And other various tools.

I'm really just looking for advice,

Thanks,
Tidife

Especially when you bring your check book or cash. There was a Jeep-CJ survey held a while back on which CJ was the one to have and I believe the CJ8 won.

I don't doubt it. It definitely looks like an awesome vehicle!

I'm heading down to the area that the CJ7 I posted is in tomorrow for other matters, and was thinking of swinging by there to look at it, I don't think 5k is what that jeep is worth with how rough that back end is underneath. Just from looking at the pictures it doesnt look like the frame has rot in it(though there are some rough spots), just the body(maybe the skid plate over the gas tank?).

How much do you think the CJ7 is worth?

I was hoping that an angle grinder w/ wire wheel, will take care of that and then coat it in something like rustoleum for the frame, and maybe try that electrolysis rust removal I've seen a couple times for some of the smaller components.

That one has been up for awhile. Not sure whats wrong with it ( if anything ) but the price was pretty high initially. You'll pay a little more for a Laredo model and the Nutmeg or Honey interior is one of the more rare colors. What about a CJ6 ? :)

WOW! Thats awesome, I've never seen one before.

Unfortunately, due to work, I am Limited on how far i can travel, to about 250 miles(i can fudge it to say 300), i can put in requests to travel further but then i have to wait at least a week for approval. And it would be the 14th minimum before i would be allowed to go due to most of my unit coming back from a training exercise.

As far as south goes, Scranton and Allenstown is about as far south as i can go, East i can go to NW CT and maybe to Worcester(since its on 90 the whole way) and west is to Rochester.

Needless to say, Canada is off limits for me unless i take leave days.

I talked to the guy with the CJ7 on the phone. From what it sounded like, he has no idea about jeeps. The only reason he is listing it as high as he is, is due to the fact that he paid 5500 for it, and the PO before him paid 5500 for it and put 3000 into it. I'm not gonna quote him on accuracy, but i don't believe he knows the interior is all that rare, and only said that it was in good condition.

I don't believe in possessiveness of a vehicle until its in my driveway with the title in my hand, so while i might talk or refer to a vehicle or maybe not notice others, i do have an open mind and will look at anything seriously.

I just, unfortunately, have no idea on what one is worth. Wife wants me to keep the initial purchase price as close to 5k as possible(and prefers below it) and that does limit the search.

You can get a pretty nice CJ7 for that price. That price range for a Scrambler is going to leave you with some type of project around here. Dont count out getting it shipped as an option though. That will widen your search.

Okay, question for you guys, I saw a CJ8 for sale in PA on the CJ8 forums, a guy name Barrys is selling his CJ8 . After looking at it, its definitely rough. like badly patched floorpans and holes under the rollbar rough.

What are you opinions about that scrambler?
Just wanted to know your thoughts on that scrambler.

4k nets a scrambler thats rough, and a factory 1/2 top and bulkhead. Getting it here might be a problem though, either Uhaul for a truck/trailer or pay a company to move it.

On another note, I don't a mind project(its always fun), and the wife knows that whatever vehicle i get, may or may-not run.
