Hi All,

Can anyone tell me what year(s) Jeep STOPPED using that "double tie rod end/ball joint " arrangement on the steering linkage?

I had early 60's Oz built CJ6 's that utilised it, but my 75 DJ5D uses the system with the two individual steering linkages, being RHD, one from wheel to wheel, the other from Pitman arm to a second hole in the arm.

Were they right, or left hand thread? Possibly being made for RHD (if used on US Postals, they may be the same as the Oz built ones) or were the the opposite thread and just simply swapped side to side?

Obviously there is still a huge market in the US and Canada for early parts so am assuming these components still available? If so, what is the EXACT description of this particular part?

Thanks for any help, Dave 64

Parts are available for both type setups. Not sure about requirments for RHD.Flip end for end ??.The first unit you described is the RH tie rod w/ a tapered eye to accept TRE from drag link.I have used that setup on a Dana 30 to speed up steering(less turns). The other would be the standard Dana 30 linkage with left and right hand thread TRE's.Two rods, four ends.
If that is confusing feel free to ask additional questions. The pics are of a Dana 27 but same setup either way.I see the parts you asked about in the link Posi posted:) mike

Thanks, Yep! That's the little devil!

Obviously STILL available, official designation? "TIE ROD END WITH TAPERED HOLE??" (PRE 1971) Now just have to find out if can be swapped side to side, or if the LEFT HAND DRIVE version uses a R/H thread, and the RIGHT HAND DRIVE uses the L/H thread? Either way, it shouldn't worry me because the critical part is the tapered hole, although in saying that, if for any reason I want to mount the tie rod ends on TOP of the open knuckle arm (as opposed to being fitted from the bottom up) and the only reason for doing so would be to obtain more clearance between the top of the leaf spring and the actual steering linkage. Then it may be a case of getting the taper (in the actual tie rod end eye)reamed out , rebushed from the other side? Not insummountable.

Thanks guys, will chase it up , someone bound to export to Australia.

Cheers, Dave 64

mstar,
Thanks for posting the photo, should have looked up the site you suggested first. Seems there may be two varieties of 'Tie rod end with hole', one for the earlier military up to CJ3b and another version up to '71 for CJ5 /6.

I ran across this once before with Oz built CJ6 's, I'm trying to remember just what the difference in the two are. Is the angle the same? Or is it that the earlier version is 5/8" UNF and the later version 11/16" UNF and uses a heavier walled tube? I know there was something different in them, but cannot remember exactly what. Any chance you can recall which variety you used on your Dana 30 ? I have about four Pitman arms off different vehicles, all with the same spline and tapered hole, just differing lengths. I'm using manual steering so it may be a case of fine tuning it until I get it right. BTW, original steering was 5 and 1/2 turns lock to lock, now about 4 and 2/3rds. That's stop to stop on open knuckle arms, after conversion of drum brake to disc, This is on 1975 DJ5D non powered axle.

Thanks for the help, have one of those tie rod ends with hole being sent across the water, should arrive shortly. Had the hole in the arm from the open knuckle machined out, a sleeve pressed in and then reamed out with a tapered reamer. Repositioned the steering linkage on TOP of the arm as opposed to underslung, better clearance between top of spring and linkage.

Hi All,

Just a quick update on the DJ postal rebuild, seem to have steering/front end/disc brake (Went for Ford F100 set up) all sorted and working, engine sitting on crossmembers, lots of fiddly bits and pieces. keeps me off the streets!

Cheers, Dave 64

Dave

Jeep Aus actually used locally sourced Tie rod end for the conversion, many early falcons and holdens used the same ends and taking it into local repco found plenty of workable options and are pretty cheap.

Wooders garage in Hornsby Sydney can also help you out
