Will a Wagoneer PS gearbox work on the CJ models 76-86? From the parts manuals I have seen they are the same on all Jeep models. Also, will the pitman arm be the same as the CJ? I know I will have to swap steering shafts and I already have the pump/brackets. I can get a good one for about $30 with the pitman arm.

thanks

A J20 box is physically the same but is better for larger tires/lockers...

A waggy or J-10 box will mount right to the same mounts as a CJ power steering box. Are you converting from manaul to power steering? The pit man are from the CJ can also be used on the waggy box. The only things that may be different are

1- steering shaft
2- TRE opening may be different between the CJ and Truck units on the pit man arm.
3- depending on the year the hoses are dofferent..

None of this will be an issue to over come. Try to run the waggy box and pitman arm.

Well, got the waggy steering gear box for less than $30. Yes, I am converting to PS from manual. Another question pops up after pulling the box and cleaning it. There is a little pin on the splined shaft of the gearbox, does this need to be cut off or it even looks like there is a pin holding it in. Box is in good shape with no signs of leaks.

IIRC yes. But if noone here knows for sure do a google search.
I do know for sure that the cj does not have that sticking out.

:)Your Pittman arm from the Manual gear box will not fit on the Power steering gear box.............different size shaft. You will have to find the correct length power steering Arm that puts your Drag link back into the proper geometry with your tie rod and spindle.

Cut the little stub off..no worries there.
Get a P/S CJ pitman arm.

Two issues. 1. The CJ steering shaft wont fit on that steering bog. The input shaft is smaller on the Waggy box than on a CJ. The fix. Get an XJ steering shaft. 2. Bigger problem. The box you have pictured uses English compression fittings for the hoses. Your CJ steering hoses use metric O-ring fittings. You need a box from a 1980 or later FSJ.

This gearbox and the power steering pump/brackets came off a 1981 Wagoneer. It looks like a 31 spline shaft like the PS CJ's used. I will get a CJ power steering shaft to match.

On the hoses, will the hoses from the 81 Waggy not work on the CJ? Could I have custom hoses made to work?? I have a hose shop here that I could take the gearbox/pump to and see the fittings I need and then when installed just get the length and have them made.

The return hose was just a piece with hose clamps on it. So I would only need the pressure line made.

Does this sound right?

:)No 31 spline shafts were ever made to my knowledge.........3/4x36 , 3/4x30 , 5/8x36 , 11/16x36 , 11/16 x40............so a lot of variables there. My guess it may be a 13/16x36 spline.........but you need to check it out.
On the hoses Yes you can get custom made hoses with each end as you need them, and the non pressure hose they can also take care of that for you.
We normally put a pressure fitting on the return side (low pressure) of the pump ...............so that we can run matching high pressure lines.

Does anyone know what size the power steering gear box splined shaft should be? I don't have one to match.

:)I am assuming you are talking about the input shaft size?
Read #10 in this thread..................You have a gear box don't you?

Measure the OD of what you have and count the splines..............

If your talking about the sector shaft that's a new ball game.
