cj5 carburetor help?

I just bought my first cj and am having trouble with the carburetor. I have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a carter single barrel. I have replaced the distributor, coil, plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel pump, air filter, and all the other cheep and easy fixes. I even rebuilt the carburetor and it is still running rough. It idles rough and will bog down when hitting the gas. It even goes as far as backfireing. I have adjusted the float and fuel mix but cant seem to get it running any better, what am I missing?

Any help would be most appreciated as I have learned much from the forums already.

Have you checked your engine timing?

I am getting a gun tomorrow to check the timing, I thought I had it set but who knows. Can't hurt to double check I'm sure.

Check to see you have no vacuum leaks.

Got it timed today and it is running much better. Still gonna look into the vacuum though as it still coughs a bit when increasing the RPMs. Could be just some carb adjusting I hope. Thanks for all the help.
