I just got a 79 CJ5 , AMC 304 4spd. I am wanting to lift it to put 35's on it. I have heard the 4 in spring lift will work good. Do you know of any problems I may run into with a 4 in lift? Or would the 2.5 lift work better? Thanks for any advice you can give!

Your drivetrain is not original either the motor or tranny was swapped in your CJ which one was it? If the motor is original the tranny was swapped in and you may not be able to use a 4” lift depending on the tranny, if the tranny is original you have a good one and can use the 4” lift.

Only problem with 4" and the CJ5 is the rear drive shaft is really short.. But it can be done.

Even with a 4" lift you will have to cut the fender wells to make 35's not rub.

Not necessarily true. Body lifts can help out.

Body lifts are not recommended around here much, they are not a good idea as they create a shear point in the mounting hardware.
I will never tell you not to use one if you are inclined, but I will warn you that if you can get away without using one you will have a much better build not using one.
35w are large tires for a CJ5 and almost require a 6 inch lift, when lifting a CJ5 tht much you are going run into driveline issues. I would suggest keeping it to 33s and if you must have 35s get a CJ7 or a Wrangler:chug:

I got the 4 inch lift installed, had to have the rear drive shaft lengthened 2 1/8 inches and dropped the transfer 1 1/2 inches. So far seems everything is working ok. Thanks for all the tips!:chug:

Lets see some pics

Mine has 4” springs w 33’s and I get some tire rub in the rear …. Had to do a mild trim.
Additionally
I would expect to lose some drivability on the street
Iv tried everything anyone and everyone can think of and mine is still a handful to drive down the road.
I plan to
Add a front sway bar and shackle reversal and if that don’t do it I will just have to drive slow and live with it.

I will try to get a pic tomorrow. Still got a lot of work to do on it, but am happy with the progress so far. Now I am looking for a decent used set of 35's. Figured I would go used to see how I like them before making the big purchase, plus it will let me save a little money for now.

Sounds like it would drive like crazy on the road lol

I have a 2.5 yj lift on my CJ5 with 32's and couldn't imagine going any higher and keeping it in the road!

I'd say make sure you invest in some good steering components as well....

Posi-I know it is the original engine, I thought it was original Transmission also but it is possible it was swapped at one time. I bought it with the AMC 304 and 4 speed already in it.
If you know the engine is original then the 7th letter in the vin will be an "H" if this is true the third letter has to be an F, = T-150 3 speed. If the 7th letter is "C" = AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l then the third letter is M = T-18 . Talking original parts here.

The CJ5 's was never offered from the factory with the AMC 304 /T-18 combo only CJ7 's.

It has an F in the 3rd position. Guess it came with a 3 speed. Thanks for the info, it is nice to know! It has an H in the 7th position.

Here is a p ic with the 36's, hard top, and 1 piece axle's. Still a long way to go, but I am slowly getting there. Just ordered all new MOOG front end parts, should be here next week.

i personally like a CJ5 with 35's with the right amount of lift...4" springs and a small body lift seem to do the trick..36s are a bit much though and I dont think you have enough lift..I see tire rubbing issues...looks kinda funny IMO

How much do you care about steering stability above 45 mph?

I recently purchased a 72 with worn out 4" lift with 1.5" body lift. I redid the suspension with new 4" lift and added 35" tires. The steering and control is better than the day I drove it home. No issues so far since the new lift and tires were added. My CJ did have the optional 4.27 gears which makes the tires manageable. I haven't noticed any driveline problems so far. I'm very pleased with this combination so far. I did a 4 wheel disc conversion at the same times which helps bring those larger tires to a stop.
