Hey Guys,
Iam trying to remove my whole steering column from my 1980 CJ5 (manual steering, 3speed on the floor). i have everthing unbolted from the interior side and its completely loose but Iam not sure where to disconnect it from the lower steering shaft or how to. the chilton manual says to disconnect the lower shaft coupling if my memory serves me but i not sure what that is. Can anyone shed some light on my lack of knowledge?

on my 83 i had to "unclamp" or losen a clamp that the steering shaft goes into to get mine out. Im sure someone else will have pics up before me, but i can get some tonight and up them up. (it'll be after the fact though)

oh and its on really freakin tight. busted knuckles on both hands, had to use mini sledge with a 1/2" drive socket/w/breaker bar to losen

If you can wait until next week, I am going to pull mine and replace it along with the intermediary steering shaft. I can take pictures of the process. I did do a search on the site sometime back on the process and there were some step by step instructions. I was planning on loosening the intermediary shaft first since I figured I'd have more leverage before detaching the column.

You should be able to pull the bolt out of the coupler at the top of the intermediate shaft and pull the column out. Note I said pull the bolt out of the upper coupler...the shaft has an indent where the bolt resides and must come completely out to free the shaft. Then just lube it up some and yank it out of there. It may be stuck and require some brute force.

Therego my busted knuckles.

Wear gloves for that part

This is what hangs most people up. Good luck

and you feel like a real dumb 455 when you finely figure out that the bolt has to come all the way out.

Anyone know what size bolt goes on the coupler end that attaches to the column? Mine grew feet and walked away.

Mine is in the barn. If you don't have a reply by the time I can measure it, I will check mine out and get back with you.

Grew feet holy s*** I'd be careful that thing may bite you when your not watching out.

Actually, it reappeared this morning. Apparently, it found its way under the tire.

I love it when lost parts find there way home :)
