I had to take my 86 CJ7 off the road to do a frame swap. So I picked up a TJ Rubicon to wheel while the CJ was down. This is how they both stack up.

sounds like a great set up on the rubie:chug:

With a CJ you have to build it. The Rubicon I picked up so I was back on the Trail asap. When you lead 90% of the clubs runs then you have to be ready to go.

So how does the CJ stack up against the MOPAR off road?

That's a solid Jeep, I'd take the CJ even with a 6.
I've been in love with CJ's since before I was old enough to drive.:D
:jeeplove:

Mopar off-road? You mean the Rubicon? I've done some of the same trails here in the East with both. But now that I have the Scout 300 I will have to test it again.

So how do they stack up?
My Tj was the best Jeep I ever owned, it went places with ease I would have to finesse any of my CJs through. The technology in them is rock solid. I had a Nth degree lift in mine and never backed down from a trail. The Rubicon package is a great package but just slightly under geared. I liked the TJ Rubicon a lot better than my JK Rubicon, the TJ has a better engine for wheeling and none of the axle problems.
That said I love my CJ5 and the Frame, suspension, axles and tcase from my TJ will be put under my CJ this summer so I can have my 2 favorite Jeeps together.

Wlecome to the "Franken Jeep" group.;)

I've taken CJ's in to some pretty scary places (and rolled one). Just wondering if the improvements made up for the larger size.

A TJ5 now that would be awesome. The best looking Jeep with the best set up. I would love to do that. I can find pretty good deals on crashed up TJ's around here. The only major obstacle I think wound be the 10 inch wheel base difference.

that will be a TJ6 and I had to add 7 and 5/8 inches to the TJ frame, now the track will be 7 inches wider also.
I do not think it will be possible to shrink a TJ frame, it is not parallel enough

Even cooler. I think shortening the TJ frame would be bad for the suspension reasons also because the Transfer Case skid plate will be in the way of where the control arms mount to the frame. Not to mention length issues with the driveline.

I got a better idea, convert the TJ to a CJ! It is quite easy:

1. Sell TJ
2. Buy CJ
3. Enjoy!
:D

Why would I want to sell the TJ. It has such a far superior chassis to any CJ
leaps and bounds ahead.

With the TJ you get fuel injection that is a big plus. Coils? well springs work for me. It may be unfair to match these Jeeps up. Old school VS new school. In stock form the Rubicon takes the cake. But in a fair matched
rig ,I don't know.

I know this, the reason you see so many TJs on trail is not because they compare side by side. I am not here to debate wether the CJ or TJ is better. That would be a fools argument of the CJ side. I was asked for an owners comparo and I gave it. Face the fact, before the TJ the there was really no such thing as rock crawling. Since the TJ the sport has advanced by leaps and bounds and for one reason only. The basic platform of the TJ advanced to the buying public new technology that was needed. The 4 point coil spring platform is far superior to any leaf spring platform.
Yes I love the CJ and it's styling and history, in fact I love the oldest style of them the pre 72. But I do not deny the truth because of that.
Leaf springs do have their place, they were a good system for all till things evolved and still if you have a heavy load they do great. but as far as an articulating platform that can expand the ease of and accessibility of a offroad platform, face the truth.

Was just messing around, Baja!

Of course TJ's, YJ's, and Jk's are superior out of the box, both on and off road. I just love the feel and look of the old CJ, the simplicity that allows me to work on it (no computers), the factory V8, etc.

I will say that I consdered a new JK a couple years ago, but it felt too much like a car. I would be afraid to get that thing dirty inside. My Cj, after playing in the mud, I hose it out and dry it with a leaf blower. That to me is one of the great things about a Jeep.

I guess Cj's just remind me of a simpler and happier time..

I like them most as I am in control, not the TECH it takes to work on teh computerized beast.

Well said people. What I like is the CJ and the TJ are the same size.
close in looks and the how can you beat the Rubicon out of the box.

How about this. Lets use the CJ7 76-86 what other rig at this time stacks up to the CJ7 ?
