Decided to get my A/C working in my 1985 CJ7 , PO had some work done to it years back when I bought it he sais it had been sitting for a couple years unused. So I decided to get it going. I was hoping someone could take a look at the pictures provided and tell me if this is the high and low port's? I took the caps off and there are no Schrader valves inside. Is this normal? I figure your suppose to unscrew the post sticking out to open the valve for service? I want to convert it over to R134A, there is no pressure in the system so I assume it has been evacuated or leaked out. I know these are the old R12 service valves, can I just get the new conversion valve kit screw them on and continue with the A/C work as normal? (I have done some car a/c work on newer cars so I know the process of putting it on vacuum and checking and charging the system.)

If that were mine, I'd redo all of the connections and hoses. No sooner you put the refrigerant in there then it leak right out.

Wouldn't worry about R134a and just use R-12 if you've already got the equipment for it. Recharge kits don't appear to be that costly.

You are correct that you will need to open the valves after connecting the hoses to access the system. An R134 conversion kit should have the adapters that will just screw on to the old R12 connections. As Neuner said, you may want to replace the hoses before charging. At least replace any "O" rings, and check that all non "O" ring connections are tight. Then I would pull a vacuum and leave it for a few days and see if the vacuum held. If the vacuum holds, I would run some leak detector through the system before charging.
