Hey, First time owner, doing a restore on a 79 CJ7 . Have low back seats (I am assuming original) and thinking about putting in highbacks with a 5 point harness system. any thoughts or experience with this? Have a good recommendation for me? Thanks!

Right off hand, I would think that the 5 point harness would be a PITA to get in and out of and not really needed. The more comfy aftermarket seats can be a bear to work with also, due to their size if your plan to install those.

Really depends on how your planning to restore your CJ. If it will see plenty of off-road use I would recommend a Crow harness one of the best made, I have their 4 point harness. PRP makes a very good suspension seat as well.

If you're restore is for road use only climbing in and out will get old in short time with the side bolster designed to keep the hip in the seat.

What will you use this jeep for that you need a 5 point belt?
Your back, will like the hi-back seats very much.

I have a set of Corbeau JPs that I think are a nice blend of street and trail. They've held up pretty good, will take 2/4/5 point harness, and are suspension seats.

Wooly

I HATE driving with a 4 or 5 point. You can't move around very much when wheeling (checking tire placement from the door gap, craning to see over the hood)
That being said, I rolled one time and was absolutely thankful for the 5-point I was wearing.

the reason I DO like harnesses in Jeeps is lack of room in the passenger compartment. It takes nothing to have body parts dangling out of the door and the roll bar/cage is generally inches from your head.

I bought a set of seats at Checker for dirt cheap.....high back, bucketed, folding, with the harness cutouts. I paid $300 for the set if I remember correctly. I had to build brackets, but that's the price you pay.

On a mostly street driver Jeep, I'd go with factory 3pt Lap/shoulder harness and high back seats.

I'm not certain if most of the 4pt or 5pt harnesses are DOT approved for street use. Would you get ticketed? Depends on the LEO. Would you pass an inspection? Probably not (unless they are DOT approved).

If their installed properly, and have a cam lock, or some type of other push button release their DOT approved, and will legally pass inspection. One would be far safer with a 5 point, 3" wide, heavy gauge belt then a 3 point, 1 13/16" wide, lightweight belt.

I won't begrudge anyone wearing a 5 point harness in a road Jeep, I wouldn't, but that person would be safer in a rollover/accident then I would be in the 2 point belt I wear for road use.

Passenger restraint systems must meed US-DOT FMVSS 209 standards for use on public roads. Most racing harnesses meet SFI 16.1 and are dated and must be changed every two years.

These meet US-DOT FMVSS 209 Requirements and are legal for use on public roads: https://www.schrothracing.com/engineering. If the harness doesn't meet this standard, no matter what the release mechanism or the installation, it isn't legal for use on public roads. Just the way it is.

Do some research on the topic. Literally hundreds of pages on the internet concerning this very subject. Especially if you plan on shelling out $$$ for an expensive 4/5 point harness.

The point, they do make a DOT 5 point harness. Anyone can still buy a non DOT approved harness and use it on road, to comply simply do not remove your 2 or 3 point belt.

Exactly. In fact, that's what how son's street legal Yamaha Rhino is rigged. Use the DOT legal lab/shoulder belt on the public roads, and the 4/5pt non-DOT off. Or buy the DOT approved 4/5pt and use it all the time.
