whats a really good quality cleaner i don't have to order online and get from maybe a parts store or somewhere. I hear gasoline is good for cleaning parts? hmm I opened up my Dana 44 and just wanted to clean everything out before getting help upgrading the gears. It was actually a little hard gettin the carrier out from my rear Dana 44 , after a couple hits with a hammer and pry bar out it came :) But yeah i want to clean it all up inside and out, what would be the best way to clean up all that oil and gunk :) thanks!

 a hammer and a pry bar  They make a tool called a case spreader for that. Do you have any of the other proper tools for doing this job? If not leave it to someone who knows what they are doing.
All you really need to do is wipe it out with some clean rags, but if you really want some cleaner
try brake clean or carb cleaner. In a well vented area of course.

I really dig super clean. You can get it at the hardware store (Ace),it's fairly cheap, biodegradable, non flammable, and cuts through grease, oil, and grimy gunk really well. Just don't use it on aluminum.

Yeah i heard about using a spreader, just don't have those tools. I know a mechanic that works on jeeps that will probably end up helping me put the gears in. I just wanted to get the 3.73s out and clean it all up. Then this other guy who is really familiar with jeeps is going to weld new perches on the Dana 44 . I wasn't going to do it myself, just wanted to do the basics. I just don't want to take it to someone i don't know and get it back not knowing how they did it. I would like to learn these things. I guess i need a shop for that :/

i was using brake cleaner, but i went through a can fast :/ i think it be cool to be able to put it in a bucket and dip them in there. if that makes sense.

Take it to a machine shop and have it hot tanked, then do the brake cleaner on the inside. When I did the axle in the truck I used a dozen cans of brake cleaner, it was clean enough to eat out of. Be sure to swab out the tubes, just like cleaning a cannon.
Now there is a thought, an AMC20 potato cannon!!:eek::eek:

Using gas as a cleaner is a little risky. Not that brake cleaner is any better. The sad thing all the really good stuff I used years ago is no longer available. The "goody two shoes" of the world decided it was all going to kill us some day.

Simple green and denatured alcohol is a great cleaner almost a spray on and hose off.
1 part denatured alcohol 2 parts simple green 1 cap full of wd-40 put it in a spray bottle and shake before use.

I used it to clean this:

How much did it take to do that? Quart? Gallon? Five?

I nearly always clean with gasoline or kerosene or mineral spirits... but I'd be interested in trying DNA+SG.

Gods, I hope that's not Rek-Chem's "Super Purple", outta' Albuquerque. They got busted for that years ago for formulating it from toxic waste.

I scrap off the large chunks, then spray it on, let it sit, hose it off.
Anything left behind, I spray and hit it with a brush, hose it off and I'm done. So not even a spray bottle worth.

Your average everyday dirt will just hose right off.
