I had a small puncture in a fairly new and otherwise good gas tank. I wanted to weld it but wasn’t crazy about blowing myself up.
I wasn’t going to fill it with water!
My thought was to go buy a bottle of inert gas from the welding supply and flood the tank to displace any oxygen. Expensive but cheaper than a new tank.
So... I asked my neighbor (who is WAY smarter than I am) if he had any suggestions. He said “throw a handful of dry ice in it”!
That was brilliant! We did and since the tank was pretty hot from sitting in the sun, we got massive clouds of CO2 flowing out the holes.
I welded it up without the slightest issue!
It’s nice having smarter people around! If he ever moves away, I’m screwed.

Lol that must been something to watch

That is a good trick, better than the guys at a shop next door to my smog guy. I had to get my Bronco smogged last week and was waiting outside in the shade watching two guys draining and removing the frame rail tank on a rental box truck. They pulled it, set it in the middle of the parking lot and came back out with a lit pencil torch taped to a broomstick and proceeded to light off the remaining fumes/gas. As soon as it stopped burning, one guy drug it back to the roll up door and start grinding and welding it up. I'll try and remember the dry ice thing for future reference ;)
