The clutch as a strong spring and is quite tough to operate. A few times the clutch pedal has stuck to the floor as well. I'm thinking the linkage is worn. Any thoughts? I'm tempted to replace the clutch as well.

Man you must have some sticky floors, Even I wash mine from time to time....... :) ahhhh hah hah a little joke there, sticks to the floor, sticky floor I make myself laugh and laugh.......

For a clutch pedal to refuse to return generally means you have a serious binding problem in there some where. Since a whole clutch linkage assembly isn't all that expensive and is easy to replace, on a cold engine that is, you need to crawl under there and fix it. Wear something old and ugly because you WILL get greasy. Individual parts are also available. If it were me I'd replace all moving/rotatng parts with heim joints. Heim jointed linkages make for a SWEET feeling clutch action.

Ha!! I thought the same thing when I wrote it!! The floor is covered with boxliner. Can you buy the linkage as a kit?

I just ordered the Rugged Ridge heavy duty linkage from 4 Wheel parts and will replace mine next week. You can also get a kit that has all the springs and bell cranks, adjuster, etc. I will look into doing that another day.

How much freeplay do you have in the pedal?
You want no more than 1-1 1/4".
Lube the pedal pivot points and linkage.

the peddle itself has a spring on it that is more than capable of breaking, falling off, whatever. It will hold the peddle up once it comes up past half way.

Does it stick all the time? Or only off road? My would go to the floor when twisting the frame.

There's bushings on the bell crank that disintegrate and the stock ball pivots wear. Worn or broken tub mounts can cause it to act up too. Sounds like it is going over center.

Hydraulic fixed that and I won't look back. :D

It just began sticking. I think it is worn bushings and a spring issue. I'm not near it right now but will be next week. Several items to adjust before the weekend. I will update with what I find.

Is there a junkyard shopping list for a hydraulic set up? Or a conversion system preferred?

For the pedal to stay at the floor the clutch pressure plate would have to stay disengaged. There's a hefty spring on the pressure plate itself. When the clutch stays on the floor I assume the clutch is staying disengaged. I had a similar problem. The clutch fork should pivot on a ball. The detent on the fork can wear, causing an elongated detent.

This can cause the clutch not to always disengage. Otherwise you may need to replace the clutch pressure plate.

4cyl Jeep slave and master cylinder. Lots of articles on the swap not a tough one. Part of the problem with the stock bellcrank is one side connects to the frame and the other connects to the tranny. The motor rocks Bad motor mounts can aggravate it too.

I understand why the hard core rock crawlers like to change their clutch linkage to something less vulnerable to frame twisting, but consider this. Have you had any trouble with the original set-up until now? If not do you really need to change anything from stock. That is after you do what needs to be done to fix the sticking problem.

just checked linkage. looks to me that there is too much play in the linkage between the clutch pedal shaft and the linkage between the bellhousing mount. there are no bushungs in the outer sleeve at either end.

This is what you should have at both ends.

i have none on either end. that explains pedal binding issue!! got a part number? or am i off to the hardware store?

You are not going to find it at the hardware store. I got those pics off of the Quadratec web site.

You need to get the right parts from most any Jeep parts place....

You might also need new ball ends. You should have rubber covers on both ends, plastic bearings and at least one snap ring. You should also fill the bell crank with grease ... you should have a grease fitting in the bell crank. Once done you will have MUCH better clutch feel as well. A relatively easy fix.
