Here is a question. I just bought a 81 CJ7 and it failed inspection because the clutch pedal goes all the way to the floor when fully pressed down. My free play is correct and the clutch fully engages and disengages. I looked through the 81 factory tech manual and can't see anywhere where it tells me how to adjust clutch travel or even whether the pedal going all the way to the floor is a bad thing or not.
Does anybody know and even better, how do i adjust the clutch travel length?

Welcome,

Two things,

1) Let the German officials know that there was never a clutch pedal depression stop on a 81 (or any) CJ7
2) Make a simple stop that bolts to the floor pan????

Thanks, that is what I thought. Unfortunately, it aint the Germans, i am military so have to get inspected on post

CJ7 in Germany? Impressed! :chug:

Will they (inspectors) understand that the was never a stop for the clutch pedal?

I would hope they get it. The VIN decoder says it was built for the German market. I got lucky and fell into it at a closed bid auction now I am trying to get it through inspection

CJ clutch pedal pretty much stops at the firewall.
You want 1-1 1/4" of freeplay.
If the inspectors were to put a flashlight under the inside pedal linkage, this would become obvious.
Really surprised 'they' do not know this.
Good luck!

I was hoping for a story like maybe he was a Captain or General in the US Air Force and flew it to Germany in his C-130. :) And thank you for your service !

No, sorry no cool story except i got it at auction because the guy that owned it before me (some Sergeant E-5) couldn't get it through the shipping inspection and had to PCS so he turned it over to the strip lot. That meant I got it for about 3k less than I would have paid in the States and when I do take it back to the states I don't have to worry about conversion because it is more than 25 years old and thus a classic.

I am probably going to be all over this forum as I go through the restoration process though. Sure glad I found it.

Thank you for your service, sir. Once stateside, where will you be hanging your hat??

I am already retired. I retired in 2011 after 23 years and stayed over here because my wife is German and her mother is in poor health. So I got me a part-time job on post to keep my mailbox and now I am living the good life. My was says the CJ is my mid-life crisis. I told her that at least it aint a girlfriend which she did not find as funny as me.

Gotcha - but I think you’ll find a girlfriend would be cheaper in the long run......

Update: I got it through inspection because the guy that did the inspection this time was not an idiot and I had the relevant page from the factory service manual printed out to show him when he brought it up. I am now street legal and my wife is beginning to accept that I now own a project car.

Good deal! Now, down to business...... where are the pics????????????

My dog just sent this for me using Tapatalk.....
