Clutch slave cylinder failure

I just got done changing the clutch slave cylinder.

It was not leaking just sitting, but when I pushed the pedal, it would leak out the slave. I use DOT5 silicon fluid. In the past, I have had brake master cylinders fail with pitting in the bore. So the silicon fluid took care of that.

This one failed with pitting in the bore that is covered by the rubber boot. It was 5 years old with plenty of mud baths. I put some grease in the outside bore. We'll see if that lasts longer.

Still like the hydro better than the old bell crank.

Anybody had this happen?

I've had them fail a few times. Usually went several years before that though.

I've lost the master cylinder a few times.. Blew Dot3 through the firewall and all over my leg

CJ's don't have hydraulic clutches. What parts did you use for the mod? That's what I'm interested in.

You mean older CJ's right? Most of the 80's era CJ had hydro clutches...mine included.

I had an '82 CJ7 that could have used a hydraulic clutch but instead it had mechanical linkage that gave me fits.

I thought all CJ's had hydraulic
I'm confused but anyway the '73 didn't have hydraulic. Now if someone tells me that '73 jeeps have hydraulic clutches I am going to quit my job and become a WalMart greeter.

True, pre-'80s CJ's were mechanical. However, many of the 80's CJ's had Hydro clutches....by the mid 80's, most were hydraulic.

73CJ's Jeep doesn't have a stock clutch obviously.

There has been some good threads here concerning the hydraulic conversions. I'm really surprised they got by you

That's not what I am confused by. I didn't think CJs from the '80s had hydraulic clutch. That's what I was wrong and confused about.

So what is it? Four cylinders engines had hydraulic clutches but the strait six had mechanical clutch up to about '83? I don't' know. I'm guessing.

I used a slave from an82 CJ5 4 cylinder - $23 at o'reilly's

The master was from the same. As was the hose.

I used to pop the bell crank linkage, so hydro ended that.

The slave pushrod needed an extra inch.

I was out busting impinge today so the late reply. We'll post that later.

That's the way I understand it.

However, I've been lead to believe the hydraulic components can be installed on any cj with a manuel tranny, with minimal difficulty.
I'm planning on converting my 1980 CJ5 in the spring.

any Jeep made in 1969 or earlier, Advanced adapters makes a chain drive clutch system that is bullet proof, but because they hung the pedals off the firewall in 1972 (I believe) then the chain drive will no longer work, and yes the Hydro units are susceptible to mud a lot, I even had that problem in my 83 Toyota, I replaced the clutch slave unit every few years, seems dirt gets in there and it pits the cylinder wall.
oh a jeep built in 70 or 71 you have to get creative, the chain system does not work and no one makes a hydro kit to fit it.

My 73CJ slave cylinder gave out in a short time after conversion, within 2 years. I think the all thread push rod I was using scratched the cylinder, but not sure. I replaced it close to 10 yrs ago now and it has been good since.
