Converting my CJ to automatic

Get a flex plate, converter and bolt it up, make sure you have a Transmission cooler, add a carburetor vacuum gadget for shifting into passing gear, get your drive shafts right and add a floor shifter.

I had an automatic in my Bronco, hated it. The bronco in 4-wd-low with the over drive Transmission felt the same and you had to stand on the brakes. No Transmission or little hold back. Hated it myself, but a lot of folks love their automatic transitioned CJ's. I'm old school. Auto's remind me of juicers, folks that can't be bothered chewing their vegetables rely a juicer to do it for them. Like I said, old school.

You do understand that you will be generating allot more under-hood heat and will need tranny oil coolers for the auto to live a long life.

I personally would never have one that wasn't an automatic, but that's just me and my type of use.

Like a lot of things, depends on the wheeling you do, etc., etc. My Jeep is used for blowing around town and 1-3hr highway trips, then some off-road wheeling in grass and loose dirt and then the annual pilgrimage to Colorado for the old mining trails. My GM Turbo 400 is perfect for all of these.

As stated, a cooler is a must and if you can get a manual shift kit for it (TransGo, etc.) you have the best of both worlds.
 
Make sure the gear ratio change works with your setup. You don't say what you have now but going from a 3.5-4 1st gear to a 2.54 for that Transmission with tall axle gears would suck.
 
Look at a lokar for a floor shifter. I have one for my 85 with a TF999 . I did have to make a custom cover bolt it bolts right up an is easy. Plus there cs is a great help of needed

I have the GM Turbo 400 as well....perfect for me. After some wheeling with my Jeep buds, they want to switch over to automatics as well. But....we are a bunch of old farts...my buds and I and we like freeing up that other hand to hold a cold beverage...:chug:
 
Been planning converting my 84 to an automatic! I already have my TF727 Transmission / torque converter. I know that i need an automatic steering column but havent been able to find any for reasonably cheap. What else would i need to complete to conversion? oh and it is just bolting back up to the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l / Dana 300 Transfer Case .

Automatics , be it the right Transmission mated with the right Transfer Case and axle ratio's are where it's at in the off road community today. Rock Crawling , Desert,Trails ,Trophy trucks all run them now and Coupled with a lock-up converter with the right stall speed and re-worked valve body are really a pleasure to wheel.

The later electronic versions can also be programmed for a form of compression braking via either shutting off the supply of spark , fuel or both to the engine.........when de-accelerating . Of course a good set of disc brakes with over-sized rotors should also be on the menu........

I've had my share of the manual shifted T-18 non syncro Low and Reverse 4-speed truck Transmission variant's which are OK but are very slow shifting...while dead stops are almost mandatory to slip it in Reverse.

I'm also changing over to an Automatic this time around.

If you're not running a lift you'll have a problem with the 727 hitting the front driveshaft. The TF999 is what you need to use.

If you're running a lift it will be close but will usually work.

I'm putting a TF999 in one of mine. Planning on using an ididt cable with stock automatic column, and a lokar kickdown.

At the rate I'm going I'll get it in sometime around 2040.
