I am sure this will be a requirement at some point. Has anyone done any research into what it would take to convert a CJ to electric?

I have done a little but most of what I have found points to using forklift motors and deep cycle marine batteries and I am sure there has to be a better solution out there that can do a conversion without screwing up the balancing of the frame when you yank the engine and fuel system out.

I am doing some slow motion research on this because I can foresee a time when internal combustion engines are banned outright

Relax, my friend.

Call Tesla.

If we put the wrong knuckle heads in charge this could happen. Hopefully I will never see this happen in my lifetime unless it become a great improvement to my CJ

It might be fun to have an electric CJ.... just in case.

I'm just wondering if you are out on some Overlander trip like in Moab or west Texas, where you going to plug in at for another charge ?

Relax, my friend.

It hasn't come to the US but there has been serious discussion in Europe about banning the production and sale of internal combustion vehicles by 2025-2030 and banning them from the road entirely starting around 2035.

You may think it will never happen but lots of people thought the Federal government would never force you to buy a product yet they did just that starting in 2011. I am not trying to start a political fight just get some ideas on if anyone else has given this idea some thought.

It never hurts to think ahead.

Solar panel back-up as a trickle charger for traveling?

Probably so, mounted on top of the roof rack. I believe it's coming, but I'm old enough where I probably won't have to worry myself about it. And will probably be cheaper easier just to scrap my jeep and buy new. Probably just put it in the will to bury me in it now. :)

I have put some research into and there are several specialty shops that make electric motors with comparable performance to IC engines as far as performance goes.

My biggest concern with converting is the batteries available. Most places recommend deep cycle marine batteries due to their relatively cheap cost but those generally only give you 40-50 mile ranges on a charge which is fine if you live in a city and don't drive much anyway. I have found a couple places that offer lithium battery packs that get you similar range to a tank of gas 250-300 mile per charge. Lithium gets expensive very fast, which is why Tesla charges so much for the extended range package on their cars. Lithium actually weighs less than Marine batteries because they are so much efficient at storing a charge and they are also more responsive to power demands.

Rooftop solar for trickle charging is a possibility but the recharge times on the size panels you can get on a CJ roof are pathetic to say the least.

Based on my research so far my guess is an electric conversion that will get you some decent range would run somewhere between $7500-$10,000.

I think different. I live in the present and don’t worry about the future especially that far ahead.

The aftermarket will have us covered, you can take my word for it. You convert your Jeep now (even in slow motion) and it will be severely outdated when the time comes that worries you so much.

I can see the electric conversion kit in my mind. It will have a motor at each wheel with portal like axles with superb off-road capabilities. It won’t take but a few minutes to recharge. Or maybe you don’t have to worry about recharging. Will have auto pilot. The list goes on.

You guys are missing the bigger picture. By the time ICE vehicles are banned, off-road travel will be illegal anyway so it’s a moot point.

Damn!

It's happening here in the desert sw sooner then you think. If the CBD ( center for biological diversity) has it their way. They keep hitting the FGS with law suits over offroading activities here, slowly whittling away our rights to public land.

My daughter has an electric Jeep made by power wheels does that count?
