I am in discussions about the correct rollbar for a 73 CJ5 with a friend. is it the same as the wheel house mounted for the CJ7 ? I did not find anything in the parts list. thanks....

Don't think it matters much. I have a '78 CJ7 roll bar in my '70 CJ5 . Works perfectly!:chug:

rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

This is what my '73 came with. Don't know if they offered factory or dealer installed roll bar as a Option. Someone will surely know. Mike

Thanks so far, we agreed to use the after 76 bar on the CJ5 ,
as I did not see any hints that it could not fit...

It won't fit, probably, that is if the front feet go to the floor, if not even then the height would be different. The CJ7 doesn't have the same floor, bed height or head clearance. I thought they were the same until my local Jeep guy at Willys Works showed me the two side by side. Yours should be like my '75 with the entire bar supported by the wheel wells. Even mine had a couple variations. One with the angle part parallel to the sides and attaching to the uprights on the bar. The other (Like Mine) angle in and attach to the bar just inside the side radius on the top.

I put a roll bar from a 76 onto my 73. Just has to notch the portion that sits on the rear fender wells slightly.

My 72 bolted to the wheel well. I purchased it 76, it was stock.

Were they CJ5 roll bars going into a CJ5 or was the replacement from a CJ7 ?

Hmmmm okay, Did the early CJ7 bar sit entirely on the wheel wells? I wonder when they extended to the floor behind the front seat?

Yes, the early ones did sit entirely on the wheel wells. I had a 77 that was that way as well. I think 79 or 80 was the change.

There is a rollbar from a 1976 here locally on C/L that sits on rear wheel house for mounting.Looks as thou it would bolt on to pre'75 CJ5 but with the bar leaning to rear you probably wouldn't be able to fit bikini top on it.At least not a Bestop or commercial made.Maybe custom made bikini to fit that particular application.Just sayi'n :D mike

On my 73, I did install the roll bar from a 76 that has the rear lean to it. I think it looks great and it does fit the Bestop bikini top.

Roll bars were dealer installed until late 74, except on the Renegades which were factory installed. The wheel well mounted roll bar ran to late 78, floor mount after.

That is interesting.Do you have the rear leaning '76 W/S as well? Just wondering because there isn't much extra material to go over roll bar hoop.
Got any pictures ?? Sure would like to see how that looks.Maybe you installed the roll bar as far forward as it would mount.:):) mike

It has the original WS frame. I don't have a pick of it with the bikini, and the soft top is now on for the winter. I can measure how far forward I mounted it in the AM.

I mounted the bottom plate of the roll bar 1/4 inch from the front edge of the rear wheel well housing.

Yep! I can see the difference now. The lean back isn't as great as I thought.
Good to know the bikini will work with a little adjustment. The mounting on mine is a lot further back. Thanks for the photos. :)III:) Mike
