1979 CJ-7, AMC 308 V8, GMC hydra-matic trans, unidentified t-case as of now (think its stock) stock dana 30 front and AMC 20 rear.
Hey guys, i just picked up a 79 CJ7 . Second cj iv owned but man is this one strange. She has the amc v8 in her with a nice edelbrock kit on it, runs smooth and strong tied to an automatic Transmission . Its really clear that someone swapped out the manual that used to be in it and replaced it with this auto. It says its a GMC hydr-matic and Im not at all familiar with it. Its tied to a Transfer Case that I cant identify. Both the Transfer Case and Transmission look to be mounted cleanly to stock mounts.

The 4wd setup in this rig is that fulltime 4wd set up with a high-low lever mounted just below drivers right leg and a glove box locker dial.

As of right now the truck runs and goes... But only forward, reverse wont work, she barely crawls in reverse and it stinks of Transmission fluid if you rev it up in reverse. Obviously gonna need some Transmission work, which sadly iv never worked on an auto Transmission in my life. What am I in for down there? Is it even worth working on or should I just replace it?

Any help or guidance greatly appreciated!

I should add that i suspect the Transfer Case is a Dana 20 , its what should be in it after all, but I cant tell if its a 20 or 300. Not sure of the difference.

You have a Tubo-Hydromatic automatic Transmission . You also have a QuadraTrac Transfer Case . Yes it is a full time 4 wheel drive. :) If you have any mechanical skills, you can rebuild the Transmission . But, check your fluid levels and shifter linkage first. The GM Turbo 400 is one of the easiest to rebuild. Kit range from $110 to $250. The GM Turbo 400 was first built by Chevy. See this thread for more information: http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f2/jeep-th400-technical-information-24384/ :chug:

Here is some more information for you on your setup: https://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmissions/automatic/th400/ and https://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transfer-cases/quadratrac/ also you can convert this to part time 4wd with a kit by Mile Marker. My build thread below shows this setup and some of the things I've done to mine. :chug: Here is another reference too: http://www.jubileejeeps.org/quadratrac/

This is really a very good setup if properly maintained. Sounds like yours wasn't  The Transfer Case is easy to rebuild. Look here for good made in the USA parts. QuadraTrac BW1339-BW1305 Parts You'll find that parts are expensive, :o but if you maintain them, they last longer. Also stay away from all other makers of these parts as they ALL come from China and are cheep :censored:

What makes you think this setup was changed from a manual to an automatic? 1976 to 1979 were the only years this exact setup was used. It was the reason for the CJ7 . The longer wheel base was needed to accommodate the automatic Transmission . :D PS: The only way you could have a Dana 20 is with an adapter. It is possible that you could have a DANA 18. Pictures would confirm identification, but with the levers and switch in glove box you have a QuadraTrac .

Finally if you decide to rebuild your Transmission , You-Tube has lots of videos for this and Amazon has some really good books to help. ;)
