Cool!
Thanks for sharing. 4 Wheel Drive Magazine just said in the September issue that Owens Valley is one of the great places to four wheel.

Is this a diamond back rattler?

It truely is great! I have a hard time believing I'm still in Ca. with so much open land and trails. You do have to watch out for those Mojave and Panamint Rattlers though!
This one is the Panamint variety I think, very bad attitude's and deadly.

I have seen writeups by D.W.Wright(Reconnoitering in the Eastern Sierra Nevada & Great Basin by 4WD - Website Menu) and Roger Mitchell(http://www.amazon.com/Inyo-Mono-Suv-Trails-Interesting-Four-Wheeling/dp/0970711530) about the areas that you ventured into. So I have just added them to my list of trips to do. I cannot agree with your comment about "So much open land and trails" though. For example, California is still dealing with continuous changes to the Desert Protection Act(California Desert Protection Act of 1994 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) that has been reaking havoc on the freedom to drive a motor vehicle on public land. I do a lot of hiking on trails that prohibit motorized vehicles, and yet some of these trails are two track indicating a previous freedom that has been taken away. There are still a lot of great trails out there, finding them does take some research.

Certainly access has been restricted over time but the Bishop area has enough open trails/roads to keep you buisy for some time. I saw very little closure on this trip and covered allot of ground in the 9 days I was there.
