i was driving to work today freezing my *** off and was running through ideas for a top. i found a jeep dj 1974 at a pull a part. my plan is to cut that top off at the window seam, bring it home put it on the jeep and cut off the front portion (being the front furthest part of the roof) and cutting off the back portion where the door is and piecing them together with flat stock on the seems and making a half top i have a 72 CJ5 . wondering whats everyones idea on this? maybe just making a full top for winter.

Sounds like a lot of work. That said I think it's doable.
Post pics so we can see your progress.

O I definitely will. Just need to figure out what's gonna be cheaper doing it from scratch or pull a part method. I'll keep yall updated

You CAN make a silk purse from a sows ear. But it is usually cheeper and easier to start with silk. I suggest you find yourself a soft top. The price may seem like a lot but it is a lot less than what you are about to get into.

You may luck out and find a good used top and be advised the windows and zippers can be replaced and holes can be mended.:D

I am a huge fan of spontaneous creativity and it would appear that you have potential in that area. Choose your projects well, they are a huge drain on time and resources. Get the most bang for your buck. bumpers, tire carriers, roll bars and rock rails are great additions and are very doable. You are going where no man has been completely successful that I have seen. If your happy with plywood doors and sheet rock screws into the windshield frame I guess that is a different thing. This is not a trail I, personally, would travel.

This is supposed to pass for encouragement and constructive conversation, I do hope you can see that:chug:

Ooooo definitely no words are taken the wrong way. (Thick skin) I understand where your coming from. I'm a 21 yr old in college no way I'm affording a top or letting my stubborn *** accept no for a sweet one of a kind half top. I definitely bit off more than I could chew when I chose to buy this beaut for my daily driver. . Came up with the idea today drew it up and made the measurements. Need to make some calls tomorrow for a sheet metal supplier that can supply me a 211 inch piece of sheet metal that they can make a 80-90 degree bend at 39 inches. By 59 and a half. From there I get everything secured with a "frame" (square tubing on welded to the inside) fit weather stripping in to fill the air space. And then refurbish some sweet Meyers hard doors I scooped from a swap meet close by! Haha it's gonna be an extremely strenuous project with work and school. I'm up for the challenger of being 1 of few succesfull hand built tops..... High chance of this ending in a clusterf*ck

what kind of sheet metal and what thickness?

I was thinking 16 gauge cold rolleds. Primer it when I'm done grinding and so forth. Then finish with raptor liner

That sounds reasonable, maybe a bit heavy. the jeep tub is 18 ga. Did you say someone was giving you the steel? and braking the corners?

Nah, going to call some places tomorrow. Now thinking about it I have 2 pretty big sheets of 18 at my parents house. I was reading somewhere someone said 18 would be to flimsy. And all the body work I have done I replaced with 16. Had no idea!!
