I too have a leak at the rear output shaft on the Dana 20 . When I pulled the fill plug it was over full. Being that the rear of the Transfer Case is lower than the tranny is this normal and will it equalize between the 2?. I am replacing the rear seal and flange gasket but should I go further and check the gasket between the tranny and Transfer Case ?

How low is the T-150 on oil ?
There is supposed to be a seal at the rear of the T-150 to keep oil from going to the Dana 20 .
If that seal fails, or is installed incorrectly (backwards), then T-150 oil will drain into the Dana 20 and can cause the T-150 to run very low and damage the T-150 from lack of lubrication.
Of course, the Dana 20 would be then way overfull.
There was a factory recall (TRANLUB) for this back in the late '70s.
So you could have 2 issues; the Dana 20output shaft seal is leaking AND the rear T-150 seal could be leaking.
Just something you should be aware of.

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the migration of oil in these cases might be a natural progression where changing Transmission /Transfer Case oil every couple of years would be appropriate if for no other reason than to give the oil levels sort of a reset. It seems like every year about this time we get this sort of question, leaking Transfer Case vent. Yes I know, this should be part of normal maintenance, but over time it's easy to forget.

I was afraid of that but it does give me a reason to hang out in the garage a little longer.

As hagar mentioned the fluid from the Transmission was not design to flow into the Transfer Case . If in fact the Transmission is low on fluid there is a good chance your seal was installed backwards from the factory or failed.
Depending on your vin number, there was a recall in 1979 for a number of CJ's for seals installed backwards.

Technically, if your vin is on the list you could have the dealership repair the seal for free. However, most dealerships techs wouldn't have a clue on how to repair it, or have the ambition to do it.

Hey Posi where is this list at? I know I should be on that list also. I know a couple of other people with the same problem. When the exhaust manifold was bolted to the engine the back bolt was torqued to much and snapped off. My dealership went out of bussiness by the time my manifold warped and cracked and the next closest dealership pretty much told me to get lost. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I did a search about 15-18 years ago when I purchased a 79. I found an official recall website that listed the SN of the 79 that qualified for the recall. I believe the number was around 1500 total available for recall. Back then they listed the reason for the recall, (seal installed backwards) and SN's.

I did a quick search and couldn't find much and what I did find has been washed down of info, their calling the seal a gasket and no SN listings.

Also there may be a sundown clause on this recall. Back then when I checked my SN it didn't come up as a bad seal. For kicks I asked the local Jeep dealer (at the time) if they would do the recall, they said they would.

Wish I had more for you....

Thanks. Yeah those recalls don,t last forever. The manufacturer has to do a little searching to see if the can find their cars to fix a problem and that's it.
